Gold Level Work Experience Quality Standard

The College is the first organisation in Sheffield to achieve the gold level Work Experience Quality Standard. The national accreditation from charity Fair Train provides external quality assurance for high quality work experience that develops students’ employability skills.

Young Pastry Chef Of The Year

Louise Downs has proved her industry skills are cutting edge. The 19-year-old, who is completing the Professional Chefs Diploma, won the Young Pastry Chef of the Year competition.

Sponsored by the Master Chefs of Great Britain, the competition is open to pastry chefs aged 21 and under who work in a hotel or restaurant kitchen or train at college.

Cheese Grater Inspired Award Winning Design

Student Kim Kay, 43, has designed a cheese grater that looks just like the city’s iconic car park on Charles Street, affectionately known by the same name to locals. Kim came up with the kitchen utensil idea for a Sheffield Design Week competition, which she won. The brief was to design a city souvenir reflecting the industry, personality and craft of Sheffield.

Degree Student Wins Coveted D&AD New Blood Award

A creative practice honours degree student won a prestigious design industry accolade. Robert Traxon was a winner in the D&AD New Blood Awards, which celebrate outstanding work in the design and advertising industry. The 21-year-old received a New Blood Pencil.

The awards comprise industry standard briefs set by global brands, and attract submissions from graduates and under 24s globally.

Finn Crisp Challenge Winner

Catering student Joseph Regan beat some of the best young chefs in the country to win a catering industry competition. Joseph won The Master Chefs of Great Britain’s Finn Crisp Challenge 2016. The 17-year-old is studying for a Level 3 Catering Diploma and his ambition is to travel the world as a chef.

WorldSkills Selection For Health and Social Care Students

Two students completing a BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care were selected to represent the College in a national skills contest. Georgia Haseldine, 19, and Dawn Hardman, 17, took part in a WorldSkills UK competition, which tested the skills and knowledge required in the sector to deliver excellent health and social care to adults.

Competitors had to demonstrate their skills in a live environment, which involved role play and drew on clinical and theoretical knowledge.

College Training Restaurant Awarded AA Rosette

Catering and hospitality staff and students have been given top marks by industry inspectors. The Silver Plate Restaurant has received the prestigious AA College Rosette Highly Commended, which recognises excellent links to industry, highly polished service levels and strong professional support from lecturers.

Nestlé Professional Toque d’Or Finalists

Trainee Sheffield College chefs fought their way through to the final of one of the catering industry’s most prestigious competitions. Emily Aizlewood, 20, Katy Whittle, 17, and Alice Cassinelli, 20, competed in the Nestlé Professional Toque d’Or 2016 grand final.

Six college teams nationally got through to the grand final where they competed in several challenges over two days set by leading industry figures. They were selected from 36 teams at regional heats. Overall, there were 156 entrants.

Hospitality Guild Recognises Centres of Excellence

The Hospitality Guild has recognised excellence in teaching and skills in the College’s catering and hospitality department resulting in a gold rating. This has led to recognition as a Centre of Excellence in Patisserie and Confectionery, as well as a Centre of Excellence in Food and Beverage Service.

Cateys Awards

Sheffield College catering lecturer Mick Burke was a finalist in the education and training category of the Cateys Awards.

Organised by The Caterer magazine, the awards celebrate the achievements of the best people, places and businesses in the hospitality industry.

Forgotten Spaces Young Creatives Competition

Art foundation course students from Hillsborough campus clinched two of the top places in an architectural design challenge. Peter Tomson won first prize and Halah Gabor finished in third place in the Forgotten Spaces Young Creatives Competition, backed by Sheffield Hallam University and RIBA Yorkshire.

The brief involved creating a design for a community space to improve it and give it a fresh look.

Journalism Student Wins National Industry Award
A former top performing Sheffield College journalism student won a prestigious industry award. George Torr, who now works at The Star, was one of nine trainees recognised in the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism exam awards. The awards were presented to the top performing students taking the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism exams during the 2014 to 2015 academic year. George achieved the best combined result in the broadcast exams while studying at the College.

Airline Masterclass Winners

Aviation students won a competition brief set by Leeds Bradford International Aiport and beat 100 other learners at schools and colleges from Yorkshire and the Humber. The airline masterclass for a regional young enterprise scheme aimed to inspire future generations about working in the aviation and travel industry.

The College students proposed an idea connecting business people to their computer files when travelling. They won a trip to London Heathrow Terminal 5 with British Airways, and a tour of London.
