Health Worker Excels In WorldSkills UK
A talented Rotherham health worker has been recognised with a top prize at the finals of the World Skills UK competition. Melissa McTague, a Trainee Assistant Practitioner at Rotherham Hospital, won the bronze award following her success in the regional heats earlier last year.
Melissa, who is undertaking her training with The Sheffield College, works on Ward B5 at the hospital and entered the competition to help increase her skills and continue her professional development.
As part of the competition, which took place at Birmingham’s NEC, Melissa had to undertake eight different scenarios alongside nine other contenders. She also delivered a series of demonstrations to attendees at the competition.
Marketing Team Win Silver Award
The College’s marketing team has won an accolade in a national competition.
The team clinched silver in the full-time prospectus category of the College Marketing Network’s 2017 FE First Awards for marketing excellence.
Floristry Apprentice Qualifies For WorldSkills UK
A floristry apprentice put her vocational talent to the test by competing in the WorldSkills UK national finals 2017. Alicia Holdsworth, 20, is completing a floristry apprenticeship at Level 3. She took part in the national finals during The Skills Show, the UK’s largest skills and careers show for young people at the NEC Birmingham.
Alicia spends four days a week training at Floral Magic in Stocksbridge, developing industry skills, and one day a week at the College’s Hillsborough campus.
UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year Winners
Three talented catering and hospitality students won a high profile national industry competition. Tom Lake, 18; Louise Downs, 19; and Matthew Steeper, 17, won the UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year 2017 after previously winning the northern heats.
The grand final took place during the national Skills for Chefs conference that attracts some of the country’s top chefs and was held at the College’s City campus.
Training Provider of the Year Shortlisting
The Sheffield College was shortlisted in the Training Provider of the Year category of the North Midlands and South Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards 2017.
The awards celebrate and recognise the hardworking individuals and organisations involved in apprenticeships and how they shape the city’s future, and are run by Johnston Press.
Salon Culinaire Awards Win
Ten students received awards for their achievements in La Parade Des Chefs College Canapé Competition 2017 at Salon Culinaire in Birmingham. Salon Culinaire is one of the UK’s largest chef competition programmes and attracts chefs from top restaurants and hotels, as well as universities and colleges.
Ten students completing catering, hospitality and professional chef qualifications won the competition as well as individual gold medals and the best in class category.
Inspirational Student Wins Enterprise Award
Inspirational student Aimee Browes won an award for launching a social enterprise project to raise awareness of mental health. Aimee Browes, 18, launched the Happiness Bootcamp on social media, and has given talks at schools on how she has overcome anxiety. The Facebook page for young people raises awareness of mental health, shares information and resources, and provides an opportunity to take part in discussions.
Aimee was crowned the overall winner of The Sheffield College Student Enterprise Awards - backed by the Association of Colleges Yorkshire and Humber, which showcase learners who have demonstrated entrepreneurial skills in a range of ways.
Student Competes in World CrossFit Games
An engineering student from Olive Grove campus qualified to compete in the Reebok CrossFit Games 2017 in the USA.
Murtaza Nadeem, 17, is believed to be the first British competitor from the 16 to 17 category to have competed in the games. His career ambition is to become an aerospace engineer.
