About this Course

This Level 1 qualification in Animal Care is ideal for students who are passionate about animals and want to learn more about how to care for them. You will develop your skills in areas such as preparing food and housing, grooming and health checking, as well as how to properly restrain animals. You will also cover some personal and social development, including working safely, working as a team and how to prepare for an interview.

Key Units

The subjects covered include:

  • checking that animals are healthy
  • helping to catch and restrain animals
  • helping to care for and groom animals
  • preparing animal feed and housing

You will also cover personal and social development units such as working safely, working in a team and preparing for an interview.

In addition to your animal care units, you will also study You will study English and Maths.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at grade E / 2 or above (or acceptable alternatives) including English Language and Science.

Experience of working with animals is essential.

Where does this Lead

Students who achieve the Level 1 Diploma should be able to progress onto the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care.

Future Opportunities

A BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Studies should enable you to progress into careers such as:

  • animal sanctuaries
  • kennels and catteries
  • animal charities
  • pet shops
  • grooming salons

Extra Costs

For some of the visits you will be asked to contribute towards the cost of the entrance fee and travel, which you will be able to pay in instalments throughout the year. You may need to purchase some overalls. You will also need a pair of wellington or steel toe-capped boots.  You are advised to obtain a USB memory stick (minimum
1 GB). Those in financial hardship can apply for help from the college's Learner Support Fund.
