Coding is what makes it possible for us to create computer software, apps and websites. Your browser, your OS, the apps on your phone, Facebook, and this website – they're all made with code.
As we rely more and more on digital technology, people with the ability to write and apply code are increasingly in demand, so now is the perfect time to brush up your coding skills. Our Coding Skills Boot Camp is an intensive two-week programme designed to get you up to speed with basic coding and develop your employability skills.
For those with existing coding skills who might have done Computer Science or BTECs at school or college, you will have the opportunity to work on projects and meet employers for potential entry onto a sought-after Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship.
Throughout the programme you’ll have the opportunity to work in groups on live projects, culminating with a presentation to industry employers.
The Coding Skills Boot Camp is an intensive two-week programme running from 2nd July 2018 to 13th July 2018, which aims to equip learners with a solid grounding in coding and computer programming. Whether you have existing knowledge or are brand new to coding, this programme will help you to get up to speed with the current coding standards.
During the course you will receive an intensive introduction to coding, with a focus on developing skills in writing simple computer programs, data structures, code syntax and using input process output techniques. During the first week you will apply this knowledge to practical situations through a variety of group tasks.
In the second week of the programme you will further develop your coding and team work skills by working on a live brief. Working in groups students will plan and design a program to meet the project brief (set by real industry employers). Each member of the group will have the opportunity to code and contribute to the overall program. At the end of the week you will present your programme to your peers and employers, who will also provide constructive criticism and feedback on your project.
In addition to building up your coding skills, the programme also give students the opportunity to develop employability skills such as team work, peer assessment, project planning and time management.
The timetable below lays out the outline of the course:
Q: Do I need any previous experience or coding ability?
A: No, previous experience of coding is useful, but not essential. You will receive an introduction to basic coding in the first week so all students are at a similar level.
Q: Is there an age limit?
A: You need to be 18 or older at the start of the course, but there is no upper age limit.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Nothing – this is a free training course. However, places are limited and acceptance on to the course is subject to an application process and tutor’s discretion.
Q: Is there a formal qualification attached to the course?
A: No, this is not an accredited qualification, although you will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion.
Q: What can I do after the course has finished?
A: Students may choose to complete a formal qualification, or you would be well placed to start our Software Developer Apprenticeship in September 2018.
