Catering and hospitality students win Michelin-star dining experience

Sheffield College catering and hospitality students have won a Michelin-starred dining experience after showcasing their skills at a top industry competition.

Jessica Nicholson, Jess Godber and Max Heath won two categories of the UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year Awards 2022.

The team won the best use of living ingredients category sponsored by Koppert Cress UK, and the best use of finest ingredients category sponsored by Wellocks.

The talented students have won a dining experience at the Michelin-starred Northcote Manor in Blackburn.

Len Unwin, Curriculum Team Leader, Catering and Hospitality, The Sheffield College, said: “This is another excellent performance from our students who are developing the chef and food service skills that our industry is crying out for.”

Student Jessica Nicholson said: “I really enjoyed the competition. It was hard work but very rewarding. I enjoyed working alongside my team and learning a lot from them.” She added: “We were extremely happy with our success in two categories. I am looking forward to visiting Northcote Manor.”

The competition took place during the high profile Skills for Chefs conference hosted at the College’s City Campus on Granville Road on June 29th and 30th.

Skills for Chefs is an annual event for industry professionals which showcases and shares the knowledge and expertise of leading chefs.

Organised by the University of Sheffield in partnership with The Sheffield College, the event attracts top names in the industry. The UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year is supported by the Savoy Educational Trust.

This year’s grand finalists were City of Glasgow College, Eastleigh College, The Sheffield College and Loughborough College, who won the overall competition and a study tour to Lyon in France including the Institut Paul Bocuse.
