A journalism lecturer who has pioneered developments on shorthand and authored a leading industry textbook has been thanked for her years of service.

Marie Cartwright has been a member of the National Council for the Training of Journalists(NCTJ) shorthand board since 1999 and has been chief examiner and chair of the board for the past 10 years.

She has taught at The Sheffield College for 27 years, and is the author of Teeline Gold Standard for Journalists – the NCTJ course bible on developing shorthand skills.

Marie has stepped down as chief examiner at the NCTJ and has just left the College, although she will stay on the NCTJ shorthand board. Marie said: “The College has a long standing reputation for journalism, and it’s been a privilege to train so many generations of media talent. One of the highlights of my time has been seeing the College and students win industry awards.”

Joanne Butcher, Chief Executive, NCTJ, said: “Marie is an exceptional talent. She has led the modernisation of the NCTJ’s shorthand exams over the last 10 years. Marie has listened to the industry and shorthand tutors, always taking a balanced view to improve our exam format and procedures. She has helped so many people master the skill of learning shorthand, not just her own students in Sheffield but many others who have used her wonderful book.”

Journalism courses have moved from The Sheffield College’s Norton campus to its Hillsborough campus, Livesey Street, this month, to a brand new £8.8 million Centre for Creative Industries. New facilities include television, photography, radio, music and performing arts studios. Click here to find out about our courses or call 0114 2602600.

Heather Smith, Principal, The Sheffield College, added: “It has been a privilege to have Marie Cartwright on the teaching team. A consummate professional, Marie has brought her talent and experience to bear on the high quality NCTJ courses we offer. So many industry professionals have benefited from The Sheffield College’s journalism courses and Marie has been at the heart of this provision for many years. We wish her all the best.”
