The academy exposes students to an industry written curriculum in Games, Animation and VFX which includes industry masterclasses and live streams. Currently, there are 91 students enrolled into the academy for the 2020/21 academic year.

Industry Engagement

As members of the NextGen Games, Animation and Visual Effects Academy, all students enrolled into the academy are given access to bespoke industry engagement which in the past academic year has included:

  • Portfolio Development and Employability Workshop with Annie Barlow of Framestore
  • Lighting for VFX Masterclass with David Watson of Framestore
  • How to Pitch Your Game Masterclass with Stephen Hey of EA, Chillingo and Merge Games
  • 'Ada' Film Showing and Making of with Tom Box and Dane Winn, Blue Zoo Animation

Industry Expertise

Alongside the opportunities presented to our students, all NextGen tutors are invited to a series of industry led CPD opportunities each academic year to ensure the quality of teaching remains to be first class.

So far our tutors have attended:

  • Using Nuke for VFX with Ian Murphy
  • Shooting Video for VFX with Jahirul Amin of CAVE Academy
  • VFX for Games with Peter Clark and Jacob Habgood of Sumo Digital
  • Rigging for VFX with Andrew Butler of Framestore


About NextGen Skills Limited

NextGen Skills Academy brings industry and education together. Their courses in Games, Animation and VFX skills have been developed in partnership with some of the biggest companies in those industries. NextGen courses are available at industry selected colleges across England (including The Sheffield College) and along with the industry written curriculum, students receive industry masterclasses, live streams and more.

NextGen students study for the AIM Qualifications Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Games, Animation and VFX Skills qualification, which sets them up for University, Higher Apprenticeships or starting their career. Every year the NextGen colleges select their best students to attend the national NextGen Showcase. This is a meet and greet event where students get to show their work to top employers in the games, animation and VFX industries. Students get to make industry connections and get feedback on their portfolios.
