Success Story

Tom Lawson

Head Chef and Restaurant Owner - Tom Lawson @ Rafters

I found my passion for cooking when I was 13, after joining a short course at The Sheffield College. I then went on to study with the college from Level 1 to 3 before doing an Apprenticeship with them.

“The Sheffield College really push you to enter competitions and gain work experience which is great for building confidence and growing as a Chef.”

Two of my favourite things about going to The Sheffield College were the facilities and the lecturers. The staff were all really inspiring and great to work with as they had all come from industry. They all had a real understanding of exactly what we need to know in order to succeed in the Catering industry.

The lecturers at the college treat you more like an adult and try to prepare you for the real working world so I also enjoyed the change of not being taught by teachers.

The Sheffield College really push you to enter competitions and gain work experience which is great for building confidence and growing as a Chef. You really have to have lots of passion in this industry. It is hard work, but there is no better feeling than seeing and hearing a customer raving about the end product after it has left the kitchen. That’s what you do it for.

I also know it’s important to give back so we [Rafter’s Restaurant] work really closely with The Sheffield College to help train and inspire the next generation by offering work experience. We really want a Michelin star for the restaurant and part of getting that is working with the fresh talent at the college because you need everyone to have that talent and top training.

Hopefully they’ll continue to work for us after!
