About this Course

The Sheffield College has developed a national reputation through its delivery of photography and media programmes across a broad range of courses, from beginner to degree level. This programme is aimed at the adult learner who wishes to enter a career in the creative industries. The course focuses on the development of the learner’s photography or media skills - with a focus on a specialist pathway - in preparation for application to higher education study.

Key Units

The course encourages the learner to develop a professional standard portfolio based on their chosen specialism. The course begins with introductory ‘skills build’ tuition, as the course progresses students will produce outcomes based on their specialist pathway. Professional practice is at the center of the programme and learners will be encouraged to gain experience in working with clients on live projects.

Entry Requirements

English Language and Maths GCSE at grade 4 (C) or above or equivalent qualification.


Applicants must have recent experience in either photography or media, and a portfolio of work will be required at interview. A basic knowledge of computers is also essential.

For students who do not currently meet the entry requirements, the college offers a pre-access course which is a one year study programme designed to help students develop their skills and knowledge in preparation for study on an Access to HE Diploma.

Where does this Lead

The college offers Foundation Degree courses in both Photography and Media, in addition The Sheffield College also offers a Level 6 BA in Creative Practice for individuals who wish to ‘top-up’ their foundation degree qualification to a full degree.

The Access to HE course is designed to offer entry to these study programmes. Prospective students who are aged 19 and over can apply for a 19+ Advanced Learner Loan to help fund the study programme. Students who pass the Access to HE programme and progress onto a HE programme will not have to repay the Advanced Learner Loan.

Extra Costs

Equipment and studio hire is available for a small fee per year (approx £35). Students can expect to pay for consumables and print costs at approximately £150 per year.


Various optional trips and visits are available throughout the year at a cost to the student. Learners may be eligable to apply to the Student Support Fund for help towards course-related expenses.
