About this Course

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will have a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners.

Key Units

Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training (3 credits)

The purpose of the unit is to enable the candidate to understand the role and responsibilities of a teacher in education and training and the relationship between different professionals in education and training. It includes responsibility for maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for their learners.

Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training (3 credits)
The purpose of the unit is to enable the learner to agree individual learning goals with their learners, to plan inclusive teaching and learning approaches in accordance with internal processes and external requirements, and to evaluate their own practice in planning teaching and learning.

Delivering education and training (6 credits)
The purpose of the unit is to enable the learner to use inclusive teaching and learning approaches in accordance with internal processes and external requirements, to communicate with learners and to evaluate own delivery practice. It provides the learner with understanding of how technology can enhance teaching and learning and covers expectations in relation to the minimum core in delivering inclusive teaching and learning.

Assessing learners in education and training (6 credits)
The purpose of the unit is to enable the learner to use inclusive teaching and learning approaches in accordance with internal processes and external requirements, to communicate with learners and to evaluate own delivery practice. It provides the learner with understanding of how technology can enhance teaching and learning and covers expectations in relation to the minimum core in delivering inclusive teaching and learning.

Using resources for education and training (3 credits)
The purpose of the unit is to enable the learner to use resources in the delivery of inclusive teaching and learning and to be able to evaluate that use. It covers expectations in relation to the minimum core in relation to using resources for inclusive teaching and learning.

Teaching a specialist area (15 credits)
The unit aims to develop learners’ knowledge and skills in relation to teaching in a specialist area. The specialist area may be a vocational or subject area. It includes consideration of the aims and philosophy of education and training in a specialist area and the aims and structure of key qualifications and learning programmes qualifications available to learners. It also includes curriculum issues, inclusive teaching and learning, and evaluating and improving own practice in a specialist area.

Entry Requirements

  • Candidates are required to have evidence of at least a Level 3 qualification within the area in which they will teach/train if they are to progress into teaching in the further education and skills sector
  • Candidates are required to have access to 30 hours teaching practice hours
  • Candidates must have achieved Functional Skills Level 2 or GCSE Grade 4 or above in English Language and Maths
  • You may also be asked to complete an English, maths and ICT assessment prior to enrolling on the course

Assessment

Teaching Portfolio

Your teaching portfolio plays a central and pivotal role in the Certificate in Education and Training. All candidates will build a portfolio of evidence throughout the course which will contain:
  • log of teaching hours
  • scheme of learning
  • sessions plans
  • reflections
  • tutor commentary on observations

Where does this Lead

This qualification allows candidates whop successfully complete the course to progress into the following qualifications:

  • Level 5 Certification in Education
  • Level 7 Post Graduate Degree in Education

Transport & parking

Please note there is no car parking available on sites for afternoon sessions but there may be for the evening sessions. Parking is limited around City Campus and this should be considered in your journey time.

Extra Costs

The course fee is £1417.00. There is a 10% discount if you choose to pay the fees in full. Alternatively there is the option to pay in three instalments.


Please note that the Certificate in Education and Training is a full cost course, which means that there is no fee remission available.   

Once you have enrolled there is no opportunity to obtain a refund, fully or partially, other than in exceptional circumstances.
