About this Course

This course is for anyone wishing to improve their mathematical skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification, which is a frequent requirement of employers and an entry requirement for many institutions of higher education. Suitable for those progressing from Functional Skills Maths, or those who are hoping to improve on their initial GCSE Maths grade.

There will be regular tests during the course, as well as a mock exam in order to assess your progression.

Entry Requirements

The following are examples of likely entry requirements:

  • GCSE Maths (old syllabus); Grade D or below
  • GCSE Maths (new syllabus); Grade 3 or below
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 1 or 2
Mature students and overseas students will be considered on an individual basis.

Advice will be given by experienced Maths tutors to ensure that the course is appropriate for your needs and prior knowledge. You may be asked to complete an initial assessment to see if this course is suitable for you. 

Assessment

The GCSE course is assessed by means of three externally set exam papers (each 1.5 hours), which are all sat at the end of the course.

The first paper is a non-calculator, and the other two are sat with a calculator.

The three papers carry equal weighting. The final grade awarded is based on the overall mark gained.

Where does this Lead

There are many possible routes available after successful completion of the course, including:

  • A Level Maths (subject to achieving an appropriate grade)
  • HE Access courses and other Advanced Level courses
  • Entry onto courses in Higher Education
  • Potential employment

Future Opportunities

GCSE Mathematics is increasingly becoming a requirement for many jobs and higher level education, so obtaining this qualification will offer you a wealth of education/employment opportunities. 

Extra Costs

In addition to writing materials, you will be expected to provide:

  • A scientific calculator - Casio FX83 or FX85
  • Geometrical drawing equipment (ruler, a protractor and a pair of compasses)
  • Purchase of a GCSE Maths text book will be an advantage
