About this Course

This course is designed to give you the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed for employment in early years settings. It is ideal for learners who would like to work with children and their families in a variety of different early years settings; for example day care, nursery, out of school care and schools.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs grades A* - C / grade 4 or above (or acceptable alternatives), to include English Language and Maths.


You will also need to obtain a current DBS check. 

Assessment

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods, all of which will be graded A* - D.


Learners taking the Certificate qualification must also complete an Effective Practice Study Task, which is set and marked externally. 

Learners taking the Diploma must also complete an Effective Practice Study Task and one Extended Assessment task, which is set and marked externally. 

Where does this Lead

On successful completion learners’ may seek employment as a qualified member of an Early Years team with Early Years Educator status.


Alternatively you could take on a more specialist role following study on our Foundation Degree or a full degree programme at University.

Learners can progress into various job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors such as:

  • Early Years Educator (Diploma only)
  • Practitioner in day nurseries/nursery schools/primary school reception classes
  • Pre-school worker
  • Home-based childcare
  • Nanny/Au-Pair

Will the course suit me?
This course is ideal motivated, enthusiastic people interested in a career working with children or who wish to progress on to university. It is also ideally suited for students aiming to go on to Higher Education to gain a degree for careers such as primary teaching or social work.

Staff and Facilities
At The Sheffield College you will learn from highly qualified staff with a range of academic and child care work related backgrounds. Students also benefit from our strong partnerships with local child care employers. The Sheffield College has excellent facilities for child care students, which include well equipped learning areas, a creative practice room, a fully operational kitchen and a simulated nursery room.

Course Enrichment
Course enrichment activities include trips, visits, residential courses and presentations by guest speakers. Child Care professionals come in to college to work with you on practical assessments and activities. You also have the opportunity to study for additional awards such as emergency first aid at work.

Extra Costs

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is required for students going on work placements and will be carried out at the start of the course. Students will need to pay for this and the cost is approximately £52.00.


There will also be enrichment opportunities throughout the course, such as day trips or visits to other education establishments, which you will be expected to attend wherever possible. The cost of any trips and visits are kept to a minimum, however you may be entitled to help from the college’s Learner Support Fund with the cost of trips, visits, DBS check and anything else you need to buy for your course.
