About this Course

On this course you can work towards qualifications specialising in either Body Repair, Paint Refinishing, Body Building or MET (Mechanical, Electrical and Trim)

Key Units

Your duties will vary depending on the qualification you are working towards.

The Body Repair route will include repairing plastics and metals, removal and refitting of non-structural panels and welding techniques.
The Paint Refinish route will include preparation of plastic and metal panels, primer application and fault rectification.
The Mechanical, Electrical and Trim route includes wheel alignment, suspension, electrics and trim removal as well as replacing body panels.
The Body Building route includes removal and fitting of body panels, assembling vehicle body components, working on electrical components and welding and bonding techniques.

You will also cover health and safety in the workplace and use of tools on all routes.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grades A*- D or acceptable alternatives including English Language and Maths (no lower than an E)
You will also need to gain a suitable employer

Assessment

You will be assessed at your place of work in addition to taking online exams.

Where does this Lead

You can progress onto the Level 3 Apprenticeship in all specialist areas (Body Repair, Body Building, Paint Refinishing and MET).

Future Opportunities

Possible career opportunities could include working in an accident repair garage, as a mobile repair technician working for a railway company or working on cars or commercial vehicles.

An ideal student for this course is one who is motivated and enthusiastic and can work well as part of a team. You must be prepared for hard work and be good with your hands.

Please note: this course may not be suitable for students with asthma.

Finding an Apprenticeship Placement

To be an apprentice you need to be employed by a company for 40 hours per week (which includes one day a week attendance at college). You are encouraged to look for your own placement. The College will help to find a suitable placement but the emphasis is on you.

Qualification Titles

VCQ Level 2 Diploma in Body Repair, Paint Refinishing, Mechanical Electrical and Trim or Body Building.
VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Body Repair, Paint Refinishing, Mechanical Electrical and Trim or Body Building
Employer Rights and Responsibilities
Functional Maths, English and ICT Level 1 (if GCSEs are over 5 years old)

Extra Costs

You will need to provide your own overalls and protective gear (e.g. appropriate work boots).

There may also be an additional cost to travel to and from your employers premises.

Students in financial hardship can apply to the Learner Support Fund for help towards these costs.
