The Sheffield College's land based department will be working with Botanical Gardens to deliver a Level 2 Horticulture programme specifically for adults.

Intermediate Course:
This full-cost, 1 year course will run at the Botanical Gardens one day a week, with support and access to online materials throughout. This course is perfect for adults wanting to learning something new or upskill their green fingers with guidance from highly qualified teaching staff to gain a qualification accredited by City & Guilds. The majority of content is practical and will consist of small assessments that take place during the course delivery by the teaching team.

Advanced Course:
This full-cost, 1 year course is a progression option at the Botanical Gardens. You will attend the gardens one day a week to further upskill in a new set of units. This will increase your qualification once completed. Most of the content will still be practical based, but there will be some theoretical content to complete, which will be taught and marked by the teaching team. 

Units can alter slight year upon year depending on availability

Intermediate:
  • Preparing the ground/area for planting
  • Planting out container for a seasonal display
  • Caring for a planted area
  • Planting a container for a seasonal display
  • Mowing turf using a pedestrian controlled mower
  • Laying out plants for planting

Advanced:
  • Pruning shrubs and trees
  • Pruning spring flowering shrubs
  • Propagation of seeds
  • Maintain and repair turf
  • Using and maintaining horticultural tools and machinery
  • Hard landscaping e.g. concreting and making raised beds

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, however a keen interest in gardening and horticulture would be beneficial.

Assessment

  • Internal practical assessment
  • Small written pieces during sessions

Where does this Lead

Horticulture is a growth industry in the Sheffield area, with many jobs currently being created. The qualifications offered by The Sheffield College will give you the knowledge required to develop a career in the industry or go on to study further related qualifications.

Successful completion of the intermediate course could lead to the advanced course. Completing the advanced course will allow progression into full time work or apprenticeship.

Course fees


The full cost for each course is approximately £630 per year. If you are unemployed and in receipt of benefit or earning below the low wage threshold, the course is fully funded. If you are 19-23 you must have already achieved a full level 2 to qualify for the funding above. If you do not meet the criteria listed above, you will have to pay 50% of the fee.  Please note: all quoted fees are subject to change.

This course is eligible for full funding. Where full funding cannot be secured there will be a learner contribution.

Whilst taking these courses, you will be required to have:

  • Steel Toe Capped Boots
  • Waterproof Coat
  • Gardening Gloves
