About this Course

A Civil Engineering Technician provides technical support to engineers and other construction professionals in the design, development, construction, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of the built environment and infrastructure. Technicians will be required to have a broad skills base to work in areas which include sustainable construction, structural integrity, geotechnics, materials, tunnelling, marine and coastal engineering, water, waste management, flood management, transportation and power.

Key Units

As an Apprentice you follow an appropriate Level 3 BTEC qualification in Construction and the Built Environment while gaining experience in the workplace and recording this in a professional Off-The-Job log. All Apprentices are supervised and mentored by the employer in partnership with The Sheffield College. 

Completion of BTEC, the Off-The-Job Log and Maths and English will allow progression through Gateway to an End Point Assessment test. (EPA)

The duration of the Apprenticeship will be three years for new entrants. The End-point Assessment (EPA) will be in two stages and typically undertaken in the last three months of the Apprenticeship.

Maths and English is essential at Level 2 (GCSE A-C) in order to pass through Gateway to EPA.

The course is delivered at The Sheffield College on a part-time basis. This means attending for 1 full day a week for 3 Years.

  • Unit 7 Graphical Detailing
  • Unit 9 Management of a Construction Project
  • Unit 11 Site Engineering
  • Unit 15 Further Mathematics
  • Unit 35 Principles and Applications of Structural Mechanics

Year 3 is dedicated to honing the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours necessary in order to pass End Point Assessment and achieve the full qualification.

Entry Requirements

GCSEs at grade 9 (A*) – to grade 4 (C) (Maths, English & Science are essential and other GCSE result must be associated the relevant construction and design topics). 

Mature students with equivalent qualifications or technical experience gained whilst working in the industry, may be admitted at the discretion of the course team.

Assessment

The EPA must be completed within an EPA period lasting typically 6 month(s), beginning when the apprentice has passed the EPA gateway. The EPA consists of 3 discrete assessment methods. The individual assessment methods will have the following grades:

Performance in the EPA will determine the overall apprenticeship standard and grade of:
