Our top 5 tips for applying for a university place through UCAS

We know that applying to study at university through UCAS can seem daunting, so together with our University Tutorial Mentors we’ve put together a few tips to help you figure out the process and submit your application before the deadline at the end of January.

Here are a few things to consider:

1. Do your research

Finding the right course to apply for is the first hurdle, so make sure you do the research to find the best fit for you. This might mean considering the types of assessments, work placement opportunities or the style of teaching involved. It could also mean exploring different types of qualification, for example at UC Sheffield you can study a traditional 3-year Bachelors degree, as well as HTQs, foundation degrees and HNCs.

Click here for more info about our qualification types.

2. Check entry requirements

Be sure to check the entry requirements for your chosen courses to see what grades and qualifications you’ll need. You might want to pick courses with a range of entry requirements so that you can list a back-up option just in case your grades don’t quite go to plan!

You can view the entry requirements for all of courses right here on our website.

3. Speak to your tutors

If you’re still at school or college, it’s likely that your tutor will be the one to provide your reference, so make sure to speak with them about what courses you’re applying for and where so that they can give evidence to support your choices in their statement.

4. Proofread your personal statement

Your personal statement forms a big part of your application so you’ll want to give it a good stab, you can find loads of additional hints and tips here. Once you’ve finished it, make sure you get a friend, relative or tutor to read over it for you, as well as giving it a good proof yourself for any mistakes or errors. You wouldn’t want to spend all that time working on the perfect statement only for a university to spot a typo in it when they start reading!

5. Visit an Open Day

Visiting an open day before you apply can be a brilliant way to get a feel for a college or university, or if you’ve already applied, visiting your chosen institution can give you an opportunity to meet your future tutors, ask any follow-up questions you may have, and even get to grips with some pre-reading material for your course!
