Recruitment FAQs

Do I need a teaching qualification to join as a Lecturer?

No. We accept applications from people whose primary background is industry experience, many of whom are successful!

We have the support in place to take people from being experts in their field to experts in education, providing internal training and enrolling new lecturers on a fully funded teaching qualification in their first 12 months.

For a chat about how to get into teaching, send your details to jobs@sheffcol.ac.uk.

What teaching qualification could I gain with TSC?

You can work towards a Level 5 teaching qualification fully funded by the college.

Can I have a quick chat on the phone about a job I’m interested in?

Absolutely! Give our recruitment team a call on 0114 260 2600 or 07468 364 418, Mon - Fri 9:00 - 17:00.

Can I just email a CV in?

As part of our safer recruitment practices, we have to receive a completed application form from all of our candidates.  We can’t accept a CV as the sole means of application but feel free to attach one when you email to enquire about a role.

How long do the new starter checks take after being offered?

Our aim is to get you started as soon as possible, but there are a few checks we need to complete first.  Most candidates can get started with us in 3-4 weeks.

Will I be able to work hybrid?

It depends on the role. Certain positions in curriculum support and professional services work a hybrid pattern, while some delivery roles are also allotted time to work from home.

Both would be dependent on college needs and agreements with line managers. We try to be flexible wherever possible.

I don’t quite meet every criteria on the job specification, should I still apply?

Yes! While the job and person specifications are important to help you understand what we’re looking for, we are open-minded.

If you believe your skills and experience would make you a great fit, we would encourage you to still apply for the role, detailing where we could work with you

Can I negotiate a higher salary than what is posted in the advert?

Unfortunately not. We use a set scale for each job level and the top end of the listed salary banding is the maximum we can offer for a role. This ensures fairness for both our current staff and new starters.

Do I need to have worked in education already to get a job with you?

No! We hire people from all walks of life and the college is made up of diverse staff from a variety of professional backgrounds.

The role is advertised as full-time, would you consider part-time applications?

Potentially, but this will be dependent upon the role and needs of the department. If you’re interested in a role but the terms don’t quite fit, feel free to ask if there’s any flexibility!

I have young children, are there any childcare or nursery facilities available?

Yes! We have amazing onsite nursery facilities at our City & Hillsborough Campuses.

What does a typical day at the college look like?

It depends entirely on the role you are joining us for. Qualified teaching staff normally deliver around 24 hours per week, whilst the remaining time is dedicated to planning, administration, student support and professional development.

If you want to know about the day-to-day of a specific role, drop an email to jobs@sheffcol.ac.uk and we’ll get in touch to discuss!
