About this Course

Designed to give people the knowledge and skills to study computing or IT at a higher level, this course provides an introduction to the various disciplines within the computing faculty. You'll study software development, web skills and computer systems, as well as having the opportunity to study Maths to A Level standard.

Key Units

This Diploma is intended for people who want to go to university to study for a course in the computing or information technology subject area. 

If you choose to come on this Diploma you will be given an introduction to the different disciplines covered in computing which will help you to choose from the many careers available in the computing sector. You will also be taught how to organise your study, how to work in groups and given advice on your future progression.

One of the features of this Diploma is that there is an opportunity to study Maths at A Level standard. This means that you can apply to study computer science at some of the more prestigious universities.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have GCSE English at Grade C/4 or above and GCSE Maths at Grade C/4 or above.

Those who do not meet the maths criteria may be considered if they hold an alternative L2 Maths qualification.

Pre-access qualifications are available to those who don't yet meet the requirements stated above.

Where does this Lead

Many students go on to study computing at a local university, however students have gone further afield.


It may also be possible to progress to the Computing HNC at The Sheffield College.

All applicants for the Diploma are interviewed to discuss whether the qualificatyion is suitable for them. One of the main things you need to consider if you want to do this Diploma is whether you are going to be able to put in the considerable commitment in terms of time. As well as attending on two or three days a week, you will also need to spend about ten hours a week in private study.
