Catering students win four categories in top competition

The Sheffield College catering students have won a series of awards at a top industry competition.

A team of three students successfully showcased their skills at the UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year Awards 2023.

Talented students Max Heath, Jack Hayes and Lily Scriven won four of the competition categories:

  • Best Use of British Beef
  • Cafeology Barista Award
  • Welbilt Kitchen Award
  • Wellocks Trophy

As a result of achieving the Wellocks Trophy, the students have won a dinner at the double Michelin starred Moor Hall Restaurant in Ormskirk.

Student Lily Scriven, 18, who won the Cafeology Barista Award, said: “I was so ecstatic to win this as I worked so hard for the award. I am so proud of our team and mentor for winning all four of our awards.

She added: “We have put so much effort and time into this amazing competition. I have learned more about fine dining and how to communicate better with customers to give them the best experience possible.

“I loved learning about the new menus and wine so that I could tell a story to the customers about our history of food as a nation.”

Len Unwin, Curriculum Team Leader, Catering and Hospitality, The Sheffield College, said: “It’s fantastic to see our students achieve so many category wins. They have worked incredibly hard to develop a high level of industry skills and knowledge.

“It’s also a real honour for the college to host the competition as part of the highly respected Skills for Chefs conference.”

The competition took place during the Skills for Chefs conference on 28th June 2023, which was hosted at City Campus on Granville Road.

Skills for Chefs is an annual event for industry professionals which showcases and shares the knowledge and expertise of leading chefs. Organised by the University of Sheffield in partnership with The Sheffield College, the event attracts top names in the industry.
