A big part of the Foundation Degree is helping you to develop advanced techniques so that you can produce high-end products, from artisan breads to specialist sugar and chocolate creations.
You will study modules such as Advanced Confectionery and Chocolate, Science of Bakery, and Artisan Bread Production where our expert tutors will guide you through practical sessions to develop the advanced craft skills required to work professionally in the bakery or confectionery industry.
You’ll also benefit from working in our industry-standard patisserie kitchens, getting to grips with using specialist equipment that employers will expect you to know how to use, and that will take your food production skills to the next level.
As well as preparing you with technical skills, the Foundation Degree will also give you the knowledge to open your own company after you graduate.
You’ll cover food hygiene and safety practices, managing for profit and enterprise start-up so that you can confidently launch your own bakery or patisserie business. Many of our former students have gone on to open their own enterprises, including Anna Sterling, owner of Sheffield-based Cocoa Mester.
Our Bakery and Patisserie Tutors have a huge amount of industry knowledge and teaching expertise, many of them having worked as professional bakers and chocolatiers in Paris, others having won prestigious industry awards.
Our Bakery and Patisserie Team also have fantastic links with top employers and successful alumni, who often attend the college to deliver specialist masterclasses and workshops for our degree students, so that you can further expand your knowledge and explore cutting edge techniques and products!
Although many of our students on this course hope to become professional bakers and confectioners, the programme will equip you with the knowledge and skills for a wide variety of jobs. You’ll have the opportunity to study units such as Food Production Management, Quality Control and Product Design that can open doors to careers in technical management, new product design and beyond. The world is your culinary oyster!
Sheffield is renowned for being a food-oriented city, so you certainly won’t be stuck for inspiration or opportunities to gain work experience with local artisan producers. In fact, an industry placement is built into the first year of the course, and our dedicated Industry Placement tutors will help you to find an appropriate placement with a local business.
The Sheffield College is also one of only a handful of universities and colleges to offer this specialist qualification, so you’ll really stand out with this qualification under your belt.
If you're keen to find out more about studying with The Sheffield College, and you'd like to explore our kitchens for yourself, then our Food, Hospitality and Travel Open Day on Wednesday 24th January is the perfect starting point. You'll also be able to check out our public serving restaurant, The Silver Plate, and speak to some of our award-winning tutors.
