Games development students take part in the Global Jam 2020

Twelve games development students, completing Level 3, took part in the Global Game Jam, which focused on working together to create a game in 48 hours.

Participants were briefed by developers and then tasked with creating a video game, or a board or card game, based on a global theme unveiled by the event organisers.

The students, who are based at the College’s Hillsborough Campus on Livesey Street, split into three teams and set to work on making a game based on this year’s theme ‘repair’.

As part of the brief, a video was released to participants showing objects in various stages of repair, which included buildings, machinery, nature and relationships.

It was then up to the students to be creative, work together and design a game around this theme involving narrative, artwork, gameplay, sounds or a combination of those elements.

James Bennett-Hill, Curriculum Team Leader for Games, Animation and Visual Effects, The Sheffield College, said: “Taking part in this global project helps enable our students to develop the skills to go further in their careers.”

He added: “It was great to see their creativity and how much they accomplished by taking control of their own projects, bouncing ideas off one another, working together to solve problems, and managing their own time and production to meet the strict deadline, which are all essential employability skills.”
