One of the main features of university-level study is to expand your knowledge of the subject to a higher level. Both the HNC and HND cover units that focus on animal welfare, such as animal husbandry, health and welfare, anatomy and nutrition, so you can develop your understanding.
The units will be delivered through hands-on demonstrations, workshops ad practical sessions so that you really have the opportunity to develop your understanding and skills in a real-world setting.
Our top-of-the-range facilities at Hillsborough Campus will help you to get accustomed to working with professional equipment relevant for a career in this field. These include a fully operational dog-grooming salon, small animal handling suites and outdoor features such as a chicken coop. You’ll also get to grips with using specialist equipment for grooming, cleaning and certain healthcare treatments for a variety of animals.
These facilities will help you apply the knowledge in real-life scenarios so that you can feel confident in your employability skills once you graduate.
Whilst it is necessary to have some exams on a uni-level course, you’ll also find that many of the methods of assessment used throughout these qualifications will benefit you in the world of work too.
For example, you may be asked to demonstrate that you can perform a practical skill, write up lab notes or reports from an investigation, plus other transferable skills such as research and giving presentations. Having experience of all of these techniques will benefit you when you’re applying for jobs after graduation.
One of the most valuable parts of studying animal care at university level is the opportunity to solidify your academic understanding of the topic with practical work experience.
At The Sheffield College we encourage all of our HNC and HND students to seek out volunteer opportunities alongside their studies and out tutors will use their industry connections to help you find placements.
You’ll also get timetabled hours to work at some local animal charities (such as Heeley City Farm and Mayfield Alpacas Animal Farm) so that you can get an idea of what it really takes to run a successful animal care facility.
No matter what your career aspirations are, a Higher National Animal Care qualification will really help you to acquire top-level knowledge, skills and experience that will set you apart from others in this field. Get ahead of the competition and apply today!
