Here are just a few ways that the HNC Creative practice can open doors for your future career.
Transferable skills
No matter which specialism you choose to focus on, the HNC Creative Practice will equip you with a set of skills that are transferable to any creative industry or job role.
For instance, assessment methods such as presentations and working on “live” assignments will help you to develop your collaboration and team-working skills alongside creative thinking. You can also expect to enhance your time-management abilities and self-initiative by juggling assignments such as essays, portfolios and research-led projects.
All of these abilities are things those future employers will be looking for, regardless of the industry you choose to work in.
Film Production career path
Our Film Production pathway gives you an excellent opportunity to develop your abilities in all areas of film, from the principles of photography, through to lighting and sound, and editing for both film and TV.
You will apply this advanced knowledge in our purpose-built, industry standard TV studio at Hillsborough Campus, complete with a green screen, Panasonic film cameras and editing suite. You’ll also have opportunities to take your film-making practice out of the studio, creating your own projects and taking part in events such as ‘Horrorfest’.
Graphic Design career path
Opting for the Graphic Design pathway will allow you to not only master advanced skills but apply these to your work so that you can develop your own style and flair.
You’ll deep-dive into subjects such as typography and packaging design, with a focus on professional development. Aside from the work and assignments you’ll do in class, you will benefit greatly from partaking in workshops with external employers and industry contacts, as well as trips and visits to local attractions throughout the course.
Photography career path
If your main interest is photography, then this is the specialism for you. The units you will cover on this route aim to give you a well-rounded understanding of photographic techniques, processes and development.
For instance, you’ll explore lighting, contextual studies, and photography on location, both in class and during practical sessions. This year our students have taken up opportunities such as photographing local football team, Sheffield Wednesday, during games and practices.
Freelance skills
We know that many people within the creative industries are self-employed, so the HNC Creative Practice makes sure to embrace this and equip you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to enter the workforce as a freelance professional.
Regardless of which pathway you choose, you will study units such as Professional Development and Contextual Studies, that will help you to understand the industry and the skills required to succeed within it. Activities such as site visits, guest speakers and workshops with local businesses will give you opportunities to make connections with other industry professionals and get advice on exactly what you’ll need to drive your career solo.
Showcase your skills and attract industry employers
No matter which specialism you choose, all of our HNC Creative Practice students have the opportunity to take part in our Graduate Showcase and display the portfolio of work they have produced throughout the course. You can check out our 2023 exhibition here!
This is a wonderful way to show friends and family what you’ve been working on, but more importantly the exhibition allows our gradates to showcase their technical skills to local industry employers, who are often looking to recruit new staff. Many of our former graduates have found employment and career development opportunities as a result of the work they display at the exhibition, so it really is an invaluable opportunity for your career.
