The Sheffield College has joined a national scheme that is committed to shaping and developing sustainable training and education for the construction sector.
The Green Construction Advisory Panel (GCAP) has members from building services, housing, and construction businesses, and is supported by local authorities, agencies, charities and training providers.
The group exists to improve sustainable training and education opportunities for the housing and construction industry to close the skills gap throughout the UK and support with achieving the transition to Net Zero.
It also aims to educate the current and future workforce on adapting to emerging technologies and the consideration of environmental impacts.
The British Association of Construction Heads has launched a programme with the Green Construction Advisory Panel which is being rolled out across the UK.
As part of that, The Sheffield College has signed up to become a regional centre across South Yorkshire and will work with construction employers to understand their skills needs and practical solutions.
This development reflects the college’s commitments in its Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan 2023/24 created with students, staff and stakeholders.
Top priorities include a green skills curriculum, raising awareness about the climate and integrating environmental sustainability across the college’s culture, activities and estate.
Natalie Dodds, Academy Director Building Technologies, The Sheffield College, said: “We are committed to preparing our students and apprentices for the new green careers of the future and working with employers to help them get the skills they need. Becoming a regional Green Construction Advisory Panel centre will help us to achieve that and also supports the college’s wider sustainability commitments.”
The Green Construction Advisory Panel was established by Exeter College two years-ago and currently has 19 regional centres.
