Construction students are celebrating after securing top places in the regional heats of an industry competition.
SkillBuild 2024 is the largest multi-trade skills competition in the UK for construction students and apprentices.
Student Jak Viney secured second place in the SkillBuild regional qualifier bricklaying category held at Burnley College last month.
Meanwhile, student Logan Jones came third in the joinery category during a regional qualifier at Barnsley College.
Organised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the competition covers trades including carpentry, bricklaying, joinery and painting and decorating.
Jak,18, said: “It was good to win second place as the task was quite difficult. It developed my brickwork and time management skills. My long term ambition is to keep working at it and to get better and better.”
Logan,18, added: “Given the high level of competitors, I was pleased with my placing. Although incredibly challenging, I completed the task within the allotted time. I am hoping to further my skills with an apprenticeship and hopefully this could lead to a job within the industry.
“The carpentry and joinery course is enjoyable and that is because of the amazing tutors and fellow students on my course. The tutors have been exceptionally welcoming and friendly, and they are always available to pass on their knowledge and feedback.
“I find joinery and turning ordinary plain pieces of wood into items including windows, stools and boxes very fulfilling.”
Richard Burton, Assistant Principal, Technical Education and Skills, The Sheffield College, said: “Taking part in competitions is a great way for students to develop their professional skills and confidence. Congratulations to Jak and Logan on their achievements in the SkillBuild 2024 regional qualifiers. We are very proud of them.”
Competitors are required to complete a set task that relates to their construction specialism and are tested on their technical skills. Regional qualifying heats are taking place around the country until July 2024. The bricklaying heat was held on 16th May whilst the joinery heat took place on 14th May.
The eight highest scoring competitors in each specialist skill category will be put forward to compete in the SkillBuild National Final, due to take place later this year.
The Sheffield College has strong connections with local and regional employers in the construction industry and offers a wide range of qualifications including diplomas, T Levels and higher national certificates.
Its construction training facilities at City Campus, Granville Road, include carpentry and joinery, and bricklaying workshops, a painting and decorating studio and an electrical installation studio with individual workstations.
