The Sheffield College’s first T Level students have been celebrated as part of an annual awards ceremony.
Young people and adults studying a wide range of academic and technical qualifications have been championed at this year’s Student Celebration Awards.
Around 200 guests including award finalists, parents and carers, college staff and governors attended the event held at Kelham Island Museum on 11th June 2024.
The awards recognise students’ efforts and achievements. For the first time, the 18 awards categories included one for the T Level Student of the Year.
Monty Campbell, 16, who is completing a T Level in Digital Support Services, was announced as the winner.
Monty said: “Studying a new qualification has been a very positive experience. I have really enjoyed the work placement.”
Jared Ward, who is studying the T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction, and was one of the award runners-up, said: “When I found out that I had been nominated, I was surprised but also ecstatic. I've worked hard and put 100% into my studies.
“The thing that appeals to me about doing a T Level is that it is one course focusing on a single goal which, in my opinion, is much better than doing separate subjects. The required industry placement is also an excellent opportunity to gain work experience and develop skills that are essential to the career I want.
“I am loving the industry placement which gives me a taste of what it's going to be like when I am out there in the real world working. My career ambition is to apply for a degree apprenticeship in civil engineering where I can further develop my skills and qualifications while in the workplace.”
Matthew Goodlad, Assistant Principal for Technical Education and Skills, The Sheffield College, said: “It is great to see T Level students celebrated at our annual awards ceremony for the first time. We launched a specific category as we have had so many students achieving so well.
“We are delighted that our T Level students are thriving following the launch of these new technical qualifications earlier this year, and which are designed with employers to help them go further in their careers."
T Levels are two-year technical qualifications that are designed to provide students with high quality technical training and are equivalent to three A Levels. Developed with employers and businesses, T Levels are designed to meet the needs of industry so that they prepare students for work, further training, or study.
The college launched its T Level offer in September 2024. Students completing T Levels spend 80% of their learning at college and 20% on a 45-day industry placement.
The college offers T Levels in subject areas including animal care, business, childcare, construction and building trades, engineering, fashion and textiles, hair and beauty, health and social care, IT and computing and science.
