The PJ Taste Catering Employer Skills Academy allowed a selection of our catering students to further develop the knowledge and skills they have obtained on their full-time study programme and apply them to practical situations that reflect those they might encounter in the catering industry.
PJ Taste are a Sheffield based catering company that create seasonally inspired food from local ingredients. They prepare a range of menus suitable for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, with everything made from scratch by award-winning chefs. They have their own fully licensed 100 seat meeting, dining and event venue in Attercliffe, Sheffield, which is used for corporate training days and private dining functions.
As well as a passion for excellence in their food, they believe that professional service is equally important. The team of catering professionals are experts in event planning, taking a unique and personal approach to each project.
Alongside sourcing ingredients from the South Yorkshire and Derbyshire area, they grow much of their own edible flowers, soft fruits and herbs, and are able to forage in a controlled way from their own plot. At the production kitchen in Attercliffe, they have 37 solar panels, which are used to provide power for the kitchens.

PJ Taste provided their academy students with a fully functioning, branded kitchen that they used to retail the produce that they made. This food outlet provided hot and cold takeaway meals for staff and students, as well confectionary and other baked produce. Through a combination of masterclasses and workshops, guest speakers from PJ Taste and their supply chain, supported our students on their learning journey by sharing their industry knowledge and skills. PJ Taste staff supported the assessments that the students undertake and provided them with professional and constructive feedback which they used in their portfolios.
The students in the PJ Taste Catering Academy were offered the opportunity to undertake site visits and support at PJ Taste functions and events, providing them with valuable and rewarding experience of work.
It’s improved my confidence. I learnt a lot of new skills, like how to use a knife properly and how to cook different types of meat.
