Exploring a range of careers available in green skills

Green skills are needed more now than ever.

By 2050, there will be twice as many jobs requiring green skills as people qualified to fill them. Job seekers with green skills see a 54.6% higher hiring rate than the workforce overall and the UK stands to gain between a whopping 135,000-725,000 green jobs over the next six years.

Not only this, but choosing a green role can help you to make a positive difference on the environment through the work that you do, creating a rewarding career path.

Considering a career in green skills? We’ve compiled some need-to-know information about your possible career paths below, so you don’t have to! Read on to find out more:

Heat Pump Engineer

Heat pump engineers install and service zero carbon heating and hot water systems in buildings, making a positive impact on the environment by helping customers switch to more efficient heating.

As a heat pump engineer, your role will consist of:

  • Finding and fixing faults in heating systems
  • Installing, servicing and repairing low carbon heating and hot water systems
  • Liaising with customers

Retrofit Advisor

A retrofit advisor is a sustainability expert who helps people to make their buildings eco-friendlier. They work in a variety of organisations, from housing associations to energy companies.

On a day-to-day basis you could be expected to complete the following tasks:

  • Providing support: helping customers through the retrofit process and offering advice
  • Liaising with assessors, designers, coordinators and installers
  • Conducting assessments and identifying opportunities to improve a building’s energy efficiency
  • Advise on the best ways to make a building eco-friendlier and offering advice on cost control measures

Sustainability Officer

A sustainability officer is responsible for guiding an organisation to become more environmentally, socially and economically responsible. Their role involves developing and implementing strategies to minimise the organisations environmental impact, reduce waste and promote sustainable practices.

If you’re considering a career that involves making a long-lasting positive impact, then a job in sustainability could be for you.

Environmental Scientist

A career as an environmental scientist consists of conducting research or investigations to protect the environment and human health. They study and report on data of air, food, water and other sources and recommend positive actions based on these.

As an environmental scientist, your role will consist of:

  • Collecting and interpreting data to identify trends
  • Conducting lab tests on water, air and soil samples
  • Planning and carrying out research
  • Preparing detailed scientific reports based on findings
