Students showcase their skills and new facilities to Sheffield’s Lord Mayor

The city’s Lord Mayor has visited The Sheffield College to see hair, beauty and media make-up students showcase their skills.

Cllr Jayne Dunn met students and staff during a tour of the facilities at the college’s City Campus, Granville Road.

As an alumnus, Cllr Dunn previously studied beauty therapy at the college. After re-training, she launched a beauty salon business in the city.

During her visit, students worked on facial treatments, blow drying and hair up skills, media make-up looks, and colour theory and techniques.

Cllr Dunn also toured new hairdressing and barbering facilities and met college leaders and teaching staff during the visit on 30th September 2024.

Twelve new barbering and six hairdressing stations have been installed as well as a new classroom equipped with Chromebook laptops and a smart screen.

Angela Foulkes CBE, Chief Executive and Principal, The Sheffield College, said: “It was brilliant to welcome the Lord Mayor, who is one of our alumni, to the college. Our students develop the knowledge and skills that are in demand from employers. Training in the latest industry facilities is crucial to their learning.”

Cllr Dunn said: “The Sheffield College plays an important role in our city training the next generation, working with employers and contributing to the local economy. It was great to see students using the latest techniques whilst training in top facilities and to have the opportunity to thank them for contributing to my carers campaign.”

Cllr Dunn thanked staff and students for donating Revive Hair and Beauty Salon gift vouchers to her campaign for the month of September supporting carers. Based at City Campus, the salon offers affordable hairdressing and beauty treatments to members of the public.

The college offers vocational diplomas in barbering, beauty therapy, hairdressing and media make-up, and also has apprenticeship vacancies in the sector. Find out more about our courses and upcoming open days.
