The Sheffield College students quiz alumnus who is new local MP

Students at The Sheffield College have enjoyed the chance to quiz their new local MP this month.

Abtisam Mohamed, the recently appointed Labour MP for Sheffield Central, met academic and vocational students as part of a talk and question and answer session.

Abtisam, who previously studied at the college, discussed her education and career steps.

As the first Yemeni and Arab woman ever elected to Parliament, her priorities include reducing inequality, affordable housing, tackling climate change and increasing opportunity in education.

During her visit to City Campus, Granville Road, on 8th November 2024, Abtisam explained that she is also the first person of colour to become an MP in Sheffield.

Angela Foulkes CBE, Chief Executive and Principal, The Sheffield College, said: “It was fantastic to welcome Abtisam back to the college particularly as she is a former student.

"The students were really interested in Abtisam’s education and career background, and the world of politics, and enjoyed raising some of the issues that matter to them.”

Prior to joining Parliament, Abtisam was involved in local politics. She was Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills from 2019 to 2021.

The daughter of a Yemeni steelworker, Abtisam’s father and grandfather travelled to Sheffield in 1963 to work for Forgemasters. Abtisam grew up in Burngreave and attended a local school.

After not doing so well in her GCSEs or A Levels, she returned to education as a mature student and studied a one-year access course at the college which enables students to apply to university.

Abtisam went on to train as a teacher at Sheffield Hallam University and whilst working full time in community development. Continuing with her higher education studies, Abtisam studied law and completed a Masters Degree at the University of Sheffield. She went on to establish her own legal practice providing advice and representation to vulnerable people in the city.

Abtisam said: “It was an honour to return to The Sheffield College as MP for Sheffield Central. Visits like these are invaluable, not only to see the inspiring work that Angela and the college are doing but to meet with the students and talk about what they want for Sheffield and the world they’re living in. Their questions and discussions directly inform my work in Parliament.”

Shaden Abdullah, 18, who is studying a T Level in Business Support, said: “It was a great experience. I loved the talk and hearing about her life especially as I come from the same background.”

Amber Forster, 17, who is studying A Level economics, politics and psychology, added: “It was really inspiring to see an MP who cares about her community and education. It is encouraging to see a woman of colour in power.”

Joshua Oprych, 16, who is studying A Level English language, geography and politics, said: “It was incredibly positive and empowering to hear what the MP said and that if you aren’t involved in politics then it is something that is done to you.”

Jacob Osborne, 17, who is studying carpentry and joinery, commented: “It was very interesting to hear her story, which is inspirational particularly for people who are from the same background.”

Deneil Foster-Dawson, 18, who is studying A Level economics, law and sociology, said: “It was a great talk. There are issues of diversity, inclusivity and racism that need to be talked about more in politics. She is a really good role model.”

The college offers a wide range of academic, vocational and technical qualifications. Find out more about our upcoming open days.
