Welcome to Automotive

Nowadays the motor vehicle industry is about so much more than just cars! With companies like Tesla leading the way in developing cutting-edge technology, a career in this field could be one of the most interesting and varied around.

Automotive

“The staff and tutors who taught me at college were brilliant. No question was left unanswered and I was given help if I required it, or asked for it. I learnt the basics of mechanics as well as enhancing my team working skills.”

Arron Fairweather, former Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair student

Which programme is right for me?

Picking the right course is the first step in your automotive career! There are loads of different pathways to choose from, including Body and Paint Work, Maintenance and Repair or a general overview of both. Whether you choose a full-time study programme and pick your own specialism, or apply for an Apprenticeship, we're sure to have something that suits you and your learning style.

What kind of work will I do on an Automotive study programme?

Of course, the exact nature of the work you will do depends on the course that you choose, but all of our programmes share some common themes such as:

  • Lots of practical work - practical lessons take place in the motor vehicle workshops and give you the opportunity to develop the skills needed in the working world
  • Theory lessons covering the required technology which are classroom-based, giving you the opportunity for taking notes to aid your development
  • Placements and experience of work - what better way to prepare you for the world of work other than to experience it first hand? We encourage all of our students to obtain placements or experiential opportunities during their course to enhance their CV and career prospects!

Trips, Visits and Course Enrichment

You can only learn so much in the classroom. To be really confident in your knowledge and abilities you'll need some practical experience. Luckily, all of our automotive programmes will allow you to do just that!

Work-related Activity and Industry Placements

As a student at The Sheffield College, you will be encouraged to spend time with an employer in a real-life working environment as part of your study programme. This could be experience of work or an industry placement, depending on what kind of course you are studying.

What's in it for me?

  • Improve your job prospects and gain knowledge of the workplace in a variety of areas
  • Enhance your employability skills such as communication skills, problem-solving, social skills, time management, commitment, enthusiasm, flexibility and teamwork
  • Previous experience of work can help you during interviews and it looks impressive on your CV
  • Helps you understand what motivates you and what you are passionate about so that you can apply this to your future career

Facilities

Our motor vehicle students are based at our recently refurbished Olive Grove Campus, where we've invested over £8 million in state-of-the-art automotive facilities so that you're getting the very best experience and are ready to start employment when you leave us.

WHAT CAN I DO ONCE I FINISH MY STUDIES?

One of the best ways to prepare yourself for the world of work is to get hands-on experience before you leave college. Our motor vehicle study programmes will not only give you the opportunity to work with industry-standard equipment, but you will also be able to take advantage of visits to local industry employers and work experience placements as organised through your course.

There are so many career paths available within the automotive sector, with a wide variety of roles coming up across the region:

  • There are currently over 21,000 jobs in the motor vehicle sector within the Sheffield City Region
