Chefs, bakers and front-of-house staff perfecting the basics, getting creative with new ideas and creating amazing customer experiences is why we love this industry so much.

There are opportunities to work in pubs, restaurants, hotels, as independent street food vendors and to travel the world.

You’ll learn classic techniques, be given the confidence to find your own style and develop an incredible understanding of the industry from staff, former students and employer partners through masterclasses, placements and more.

Our students are also a crucial part of our AA Rosette Highly Commended and People 1st Gold rated restaurant, The Silver Plate, serving exquisite food and providing top-class service to the public.

Which programme is right for me?

Picking the right course is the first step in your catering and hospitality career! Whether you choose a full-time study programme and pick your own specialism, join one of our MSK Ingredients Employers Skills Academies or head straight into an Apprenticeship, we're sure to have something that suits you and your learning style. 

What kind of work will I do on my course?

Whether it's preparing fantastic dishes in our industry-standard kitchens or serving the general public in The Silver Plate restaurant, our students are given plenty of opportunities to use the skills they are taught.

Our full-time study programmes will give you the opportunity to build on your technical and theoretical knowledge, but most importantly you will learn how to put your practical skills into action. That could be doing prep in one of our professional-standard kitchens, working in The Silver Plate, catering and serving at the PJ Taste Catering outlet or preparing canapes for events. 

Trips, Visits and Competitions

As you would expect, our catering and hospitailty courses are full of practical learning elements based in our industry-standard kitchens and restaurant. However, it is also important that you further develop your skills by learning from industry professionals. Luckily all of our catering and hospitality courses include opportunities to visit professional kitchens, engage in work experience and undertake masterclasses.

Our Employer Skills Academies are a unique opportunity for ambitious students to engage with local employers and apply their academic knowledge to real-life business scenarios. 

The MSK Professional Cookery Academy Academy allows students to engage directly with a leading supplier for the country's catering & hospitality industry, and benefit from their industry expertise. Members of the academy programme will benefit from:

  • Learning in a dedicated MSK branded classroom with top-class facilities and equipment
  • Taking part in seminars and workshops with MSK employees

FdSc in Bakery and Patisserie Technology

The FdSc in Bakery and Patisserie Technology is a specifically designed pathway for a career in plant bakeries, retail bakeries and small craft or artisan business. The programme provides opportunities for students to gain valuable insight and experience into the industry with masterclasses by industry professionals, guest speakers, visits and placements in the workplace. This all ensures students graduate with practical skills and technical knowledge which are highly sought-after within bakery, confectionery and other food industries.


The shining star of our catering and hospitality offer is our onsite restaurant, The Silver Plate. Serving lunch and dinner to the public throughout term-time, The Silver Plate is the ideal setting to hone your professional skills. Combine this with our 3 other pro-kitchens, a specialist baking and patisserie kitchen and hot-food outlet and you've got the perfect environment to help you go further, no matter what your aspirations are.


What can I do once I finish my studies?

At The Sheffield College, we know that one of the most appealing things to employers is candidates with experience, that's why we try to give our students as much hands-on experience as possible during their study programme or Apprenticeship. 

The catering and hospitality sector encompasses a huge variety of job roles, from chef de partie to catering managers and front of house supervisors. Plus, with Sheffield being a hot-spot for independent restaurants and eateries, there are loads of opportunities for you to take advantage of once you finish your study programme.
