The Sheffield College is an amazing place to study sport!

Whether you study sport science, coaching or fitness, or join our Elite Sports Academies, you’ll have the chance to represent the college competitively for one of our many teams in the national leagues and gain additional sporting qualifications along the way.

We also have great connections with all the major sporting clubs across the city, which provide unrivalled opportunities for career experience at places such as Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield Sharks.

Why should I study sport at The Sheffield College?

Study our university level qualifications

There’s a pretty big misconception about getting a degree level qualification; you have to go to university to get one. Quite simply, that’s not true!

At UC Sheffield, you can join an increasing number of students who are choosing to study university level qualifications in a wide range of career driven courses with us.

Our sporting qualifications include:

  • Foundation Degree in Sport Coaching and Exercise
  • Foundation Degree in Physical Education and School Sport

Elite Sports Academies

After applying to study with us, students are able to represent our Elite Sports Academies in:

  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Cricket (coming soon)
  • Rugby (coming soon)

The Academy gives all students aged 16-19 the opportunity to undertake workshops with local sports clubs and engage with projects to develop their employability skills alongside their BTEC qualifications. Students in the Elite Sports Academy will be encouraged to host and coach sporting events for their peers as well as apply for sport opportunities which are available to them worldwide.

Students will be supported to compete professionally and will be encouraged to apply for the most elite teams worldwide.

Sport scholarship programme

Our Sport Scholarship programme gives students competing at regional, national and international levels the flexibility and mentoring to the highest stage in sport and in your studies, without having to compromise on your development, training and competition schedules. Benefits of the programme include:

  • Flexible timetable around your studies
  • Opportunity to represent the college at AOC and/or BUCS level competition
  • Sports science support (physio and gym access)
  • Sports kit and equipment
  • Mentor support

This programme is accredited by Sport England’s Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), recognising our commitment to supporting students who are following a dual career route.

Our students have fantastic opportunities to work and learn alongside some of the best employers in the region, including:

  • Sheffield Wednesday Football Club
  • Sheffield International Venues (SIV)
  • NCS
  • England Basketball

Where will I be studying?

Our students study at our Hillsborough Campus, in our sports hall, fitness suite, and all-weather sports pitches. Some classes for the Extended Diploma in Sport may also take place in the sports hall at City Campus.

 

 

Work-related activity, trips and visits

Studying in one of the best sporting cities in the country means that you'll have loads of opportunities to visit professional venues, such as the English Institute of Sport and Ponds Forge International Sports Venue.

Students have also had opportunities to travel across Europe, visiting the Netherlands and Portugal as part of the Turing Scheme and competing in international tournaments in Hungary.

What can you do after?

By 2028, there will be over 7,000 jobs in sport in South Yorkshire providing opportunities for employment as a:

  • Fitness instructor
  • Sports coach
  • PE teacher
  • Exercise scientist

After finishing their studies with us, many students go on to university or into employment.
