What is a sector-specific Open Day?

College Open Days are the best way to get a real taste of college life and find out more about the right study programme for you.

From February 2022 onwards, we will be hosting a number of sector-specific Open Days. These Open Days have been tailored to be really specific to different departments and will focus on a few subject areas instead of our whole curriculum. Our sector-specific Open Days will include interactive live lessons, engaging taster activities and demonstrations of each subject area, to show you exactly what each study programme has to offer, so that you have enough information to make a decision on what programme is best for you.

We will discuss the careers available to you in those sectors to help you plan a clear route into the career that you want.

At one of The Sheffield College sector-specific Open Days, you’ll get the chance to:

At The Sheffield College, we have a dedicated Careers Advice Service who are on hand to help you achieve your dream career by providing guidance and resources, as well as hosting careers events throughout the year. There will be opportunities available at sector-specific Open Days to speak to our job experts about careers you’re interested in and what you need to do to get there. Employers from each department will also be present, to discuss experiences in their industry and to give you a better understanding of what careers you can consider based on what you choose to study.

You can find out more about the support available and how our Careers Advice Service can help you with your career planning here:

Our sector-specific Open Days will offer a hands-on experience. You’ll get to take part in interactive taster activities to give you a flavour of what you'd be doing when you study with us, varying from talks with industry health experts, to baking biscuits and even forensic fingerprinting sessions! There’ll be something available for all career paths.

You’ll also get to witness live lessons, demonstrations and workshops in the areas you’re most passionate about, and watch student lessons to see how we will develop your skills.

At our sector-specific Open Days, you will get the chance to meet the people who will be teaching you and have a chat about what each qualification involves, so you can decide which study programme or Apprenticeship is right for you. All subject areas will also be offering an interactive taster activity for all visitors to try, giving you first-hand experience of what it would be like to study that subject. Start your career journey and take a look at what we have available here.

During our sector-specific Open Days, you will have the opportunity to meet some of our current students and view examples of work that you will be carrying out on your future study programme. There will also be live demonstrations, interactive live lessons and performances to let you experience what being a student at The Sheffield College is like.

You’ll be able to tour our facilities and see where you’ll be learning, whether that’s in our professional catering kitchens showcasing your culinary skills, or in our early-years sensory classrooms creating interactive games and activities for toddlers!

Tutors will also be providing live demonstrations of our facilities in use, so that you can see what a normal day would be like for the study programme that you are interested in.
