Made in Sheffield Engineering Employer Skills Academy

The Made in Sheffield Engineering Employer Skills Academy provides students with the opportunity to develop industry knowledge, technical skills and professional behaviours through direct engagement with leading engineering and manufacturing organisations. Based at the Advanced Technology Centre, the academy helps students connect their studies with the realities of a modern engineering career while gaining valuable insight into one of Sheffield's most important industries. This unique partnership brings together employers and industry leaders to inspire the next generation of engineers and manufacturers.

About Made in Sheffield Engineering Employer Skills Academy

The Made in Sheffield Engineering Employer Skills Academy has been created to support students studying engineering and related disciplines by combining technical learning with meaningful industry engagement. Developed in partnership with Made in Sheffield, the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, the academy gives students access to valuable experiences that enhance their studies and career aspirations.

Throughout their programme, students have the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals, attend specialist workshops and masterclasses, and take part in activities designed to develop their employability skills. These experiences provide insight into the diverse career opportunities available within engineering and manufacturing, helping students understand how their skills can be applied across a wide range of sectors.

The academy encourages students to explore emerging technologies, learn about current industry challenges and gain a deeper understanding of professional engineering environments. Through employer engagement, site visits and industry-led projects, students develop the knowledge, confidence and workplace awareness needed to progress successfully into apprenticeships, employment or further study.

Students will develop knowledge and skills in areas including:

  • Engineering materials and processes

  • Manufacturing and production environments

  • Industry projects and problem-solving

  • Engineering career pathways

  • Professional and employability skills

  • Innovation and future technologies

  • Teamwork and communication

  • Workplace expectations and professional practice

"Made in Sheffield" means just that, and manufacturing companies needs skilled engineers to deliver the next generation of quality products. This collaboration with Sheffield College is about preparing young people to be successful engineers and develop their careers in this most varied and exciting discipline.  Whether this is in materials, aerospace, automotive, energy, infrastructure, defence, industrial processes or research; engineering is the best gateway to opportunity."
