Our top 5 tips for applying for a university place through UCAS

We know that applying to study at university through UCAS can seem daunting, so together with our University Tutorial Mentors we’ve put together a few tips to help you figure out the process and submit your application before the deadline at the end of January.

Here are a few things to consider:

1. Do your research

Start by finding the course that fits you best. Think about assessments, work placements, or teaching styles that suit your needs.

Don’t forget to explore different qualifications too - at UC Sheffield, we offer traditional Bachelors degrees, HTQs, foundation degrees, and HNCs. We've also just launched our brand new HN Flex model for ultimate flexibility!

2. Check entry requirements

Make sure you meet the entry requirements for your chosen courses. It's a good idea to apply for a mix of options, including one as a backup in case your grades don’t go as planned.

At UC Sheffield, we accept a variety of qualifications for entry onto our degree level programmes, from A Levels and BTECs to Access Diplomas and more.

3. Speak to your tutors

Your tutor will likely write your reference, so chat with them about your plans. They can support your application by highlighting your strengths in their statement.

We also have dedicated HE Tutorial Mentors in-house in case you have specific questions about applying to UC Sheffield or want to know more about studying at university level!

4. Proofread your personal statement

Your personal statement is crucial! Write a strong draft and then ask someone you trust (a friend, relative or tutor) to proofread it. Don’t let a simple typo spoil all your hard work!

We also have a dedicated HE Careers Advisor who can help you with writing a successful personal statement.

5. Visit an Open Day

Open Days are a great way to get a feel for your future college or university.

Our January Open Day is the perfect opportunity to meet our UC Sheffield tutors, ask questions about our courses and get support and guidance with your UCAS application if you haven't already applied!

Don't forget to submit your UCAS application by 29th January! Click here to read our guide on how to apply.
