About this Course

The Core Construction Skills (Brickwork) programme is designed to prepare people to enter the construction industry as bricklayers. This programme will give you a thorough grounding in the practical aspects of bricklaying, enabling you the opportunity to progress to a trade Diploma upon successful completion.

Key Units

This programme, through a learner-focused progression plan, will further develop your core construction skills at Level 1 by completing the 6705-13 Diploma in Construction. It will teach you the core skills involved in brickwork. You will cover building methods and technology used within the industry, as well as key decorating skills such as bricklaying. You will also extend your knowledge of the fundamental elements of health and safety practices on a brickwork site.

  • Constructing Half-brick and Block Walling
  • Bricklaying
  • Cavity Wall Installations
English and Maths
These skills are at the heart of construction, and learners will be expected to complete English and Maths studies as part of their programme (unless you hold a GCSE grade 4 [reformed grading] or grade C [legacy grading] in Maths and/or English Language).

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grades A*- E / grade 2 or above (or acceptable alternatives), including English Language.

Where does this Lead

This qualification is designed for people wishing to take up a career within the building industry as a bricklayer. Successful completion of all the elements of this programme may lead to progression to a Trade Specific Diploma, or onto an Apprenticeship.

This qualification will lead to opportunities at Level 2 and then a successful career in the bricklaying industry.

Work Experience
All learners will complete a number of supervised site visits to local and nationally recognised employers.

Personal Study
Students will be expected to work independently on project work when they are not in college, to assist with their revision and independent study skills.

Extra Costs

For this course you will be required to buy PPE college work wear. You will need to bring your own overalls and safety boots for workshop sessions as a minimum requirement. All other safety equipment will be provided on an as and when needed basis.
