About this Course

The subject is perfect anyone who wants to go into the protective services such as the emergency services and the Armed Forces, or to progress their study to university level.

Key Units

On this programme, students will learn about discipline, teamwork and leadership. They will also learn about theoretical units such as law and the government. 

There is also a practical side to the programme in which students will learn about fitness and it's benefits. Fitness testing is part of the course as well as the outdoor sector such as navigation.

The above are mandatory over two years with an overview of added units from the following
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions
  • Command and Control

  • Research Project

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs grade A* - C / grade 4 or above (or acceptable alternatives), to include English Language.

Assessment include:

  • Essays
  • Group presentations
  • One-to-ones
  • PowerPoint presentations 
  • Practicals
  • One unit has an exam

Future opportunities include full time employment or higher education, including our own Foundation Degree in Public Services (Policing Studies) which is taught at Hillsborough Campus.

Students are expected to do some independent learning from home when needed. 

Throughout the progamme, we host a wide range of guest speakers from the Armed Forces and emergency services who provide interactive and engaging careers-based talks, workshops and masterclasses. These talks add value as it gives a much more detailed background of the roles and from experienced members of the services. 

Students will also complete work experience whilst studying.

Extra Costs

A uniformed polo shirt is required for students and costs approximately £25; but a cheaper version can be used.

Students in financial hardship may be eligible to apply to the Learner Support Fund for assistance with course related expenses.
