About this Course

This Diploma has been specifically written to enable adults to undertake a year long intensive qualification which, upon completion, will enable sufficient credits to progress to study in Higher Education. The Diploma will introduce students to the fundamental skills to form a basis for further study in policing and links directly into a policing pathway aimed at assisting individuals to further their career prospects in policing and the criminal justice sector.

Key Units

In the last few years, the recruitment process for joining the police has undergone a major change - namely, you'll need to have at least a degree-level qualification by the time you complete your probation. This means that getting a relevant higher education qualification before you apply will give you a good head start. If you're keen to join the police but are worried that your grades or lack of qualifications may be holding you back from going to university, our Access to HE Diploma in Policing could be perfect for you.

The Access to HE Diploma in Policing draws upon four main fields of study whilst also developing the study skills that will be required for higher education.

You will delve into subjects in law, criminology, sociology and psychology. Examples of units include:

  • The Powers of the Police
  • Theories of Crime and Deviance
  • Conformity and Obedience
  • Theoretical Approaches to Criminology

Entry Requirements

  • English GCSE grade 4/C or above
  • Maths GCSE grade 4/C or above (or an acceptable alternative)
Relevant work experience of voluntary work in the sector would prove beneficial to you and enhance your experience on the Diploma.

Assessment

The Diploma is assessed through assignments on each unit of study. There are no end point assessments and your grades accrued through successful completion of assignments (which are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction) will form your overall grade.

Where does this Lead

Successful completion of this course will open opportunities to study at Higher Education level.

Students may wish to continue their study on our highly successful Foundation Degree in Policing (validated by Sheffield Hallam University).
