About this Course

This qualification is aimed at students whose goal is to achieve professional status as a fully qualified, practicing counsellor. It may also be appropriate for those working in roles where counselling skills are needed: for example, nursing, teaching, social work, voluntary sector, the police and armed forces.

Key Units

The Level 4 Diploma in Counselling Practice covers 7 units/components over the 2 years.

Examples of units that you study on the course in the first and second year include:

Year 1
Supervised Practice in Counselling
Students will record and evaluate 100 hours of their own counselling practice, monitoring the development of their self-awareness as a result of clinical practice.

Counselling Theory
This component will provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the main approaches to counselling and the theorists that underpin most counselling practice.

Year 2
Blended Practice
This component will provide students with an understanding of working with clients using forms of communication other than traditional face-to-face ‘in the room’ working.

Working with Anxiety
This component will provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for this special area of practice. Students will consider the particular issues counsellors confront when working with clients who present with anxiety issues, and address how different counselling theories may affect both the process and outcome of counselling.

Entry Requirements

Students must have a Level 2 English or Literacy qualification, such as GCSE or Functional Skills, and a recognised and approved Level 3 counselling qualification that contains both an element of skills and theory.

Students are also expected to complete an enhanced DBS check to ensure they are suitable to go on a counselling placement.

Assessment

Students will be assessed in a variety of ways including external set exams, essays, observations, scenario analysis and supervised practice.

Each component will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, and will go towards the overall qualification grade.

Where does this Lead

Upon completion of this qualification, students may potentially want to take their studies further and progress onto a Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling or a degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy, for example.

Future Opportunities

Although counselling has yet to become a profession regulated by statute, the Professional Standards Authority’s (PSA) Accredited Register programme is becoming recognised as a prestigious quality mark for counsellors. Two of the most well-known professional organisations for counsellors are British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and National Counselling Society (NCS). Both hold PSA Accredited Registers and regard registration as the minimum standard for practice.

Once students have successfully passed the the AIM Level 4 Diploma in Counselling Practice they are able to register with either BACP or NCS and practice as a qualified counsellor.

Both BACP and NCS members can choose to work towards higher levels of professional recognition and enhanced employment opportunities.
