About this Course

On this course, you will gain a thorough understanding of Physical Education (PE) in schools and wider communities, which will allow you to make a real difference to the development of young people. Throughout this Foundation Degree, you will develop your teaching, learning and leadership skills, enabling you to become a highly employable expert on PE and school sport. Over the duration of the course, you will develop skills in a range of sports including traditional sports, aquatics and outdoor adventure, benefiting from learning at world class sports facilities such as the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield. You’ll also have the opportunity to achieve a range of additional qualifications such as NGB Level 1 and 2 Coaching Awards, alongside the 1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport. You will be supported to gain experience of working in primary and secondary school settings, all of which will allow you to secure various paid roles in a PE school setting.

Key Units

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE English and Maths (grade C/4 or above)
  • 64 UCAS points from one of the following: A Levels/AVCE/BTEC National Diploma/Access to Higher Education qualification
  • Level 2 Adult Literacy or an IELTS score of 6.0 for international students
  • Up to date DBS check (this is a mandatory requirement that all students obtain at the start of the course)
It is strongly recommended that you have GCSE English Language & Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) to access this course as it is a requirement for progression to the top-up honours degree. Applicants who do not should contact the Course Leader to discuss studying these qualifications alongside the Foundation Degree.

All students over the age of 21 will be considered, including those without formal qualifications. We strongly recommend that you tell us about any long term health conditions or disabilities you may have - this is so we can assess whether we can deliver the course in such a way that you can meet the course requirements and take part without disadvantage. Assessment

The course is structured around a combination of taught, directed and self-directed learning opportunities. You are expected to undertake multiple roles and staff will help you to build your personal and academic skills.

You’ll combine theory with hands-on projects in our exceptional sports facilities – giving you true-to-life experience and excellent preparation for a rewarding career in a range of roles. The course is also carefully designed and aligned with professional teaching standards. You’ll gain the professional expertise and knowledge to be well-positioned for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Where does this Lead

Students who study a SHU-validated Foundation Degree will receive an offer for their designated full time honours degree progression route at Sheffield Hallam University, provided that they submit an application via UCAS within the deadline. The offer of a place on the Level 6 BSc (Hons) PE and School Sport degree made by the university will be subject to:
  • Successful completion of the Foundation Degree programme
  • Submission of a satisfactory personal statement and reference
  • Meeting the university's literacy and numeracy requirements
  • Satisfying any additional specific course requirements for entry to the designated progression route (eg. successful completion of associated transition studies, portfolio, interview or any non-academic conditions)
Upon completion of the full BSc (Hons) PE and School Sport you will be in a strong position to apply for teacher training and postgraduate study, such as:
  • PGCE (Primary or Secondary teaching)
  • Initial Teacher Training (School’s Direct)
  • Postgraduate study (e.g. various Masters degrees in Sport, Physical Activity, and Education

    Extra Costs

    Students will be expected to invest in a range of The Sheffield College sports clothing items in order to maintain a professional image of a PE and School Sport practitioner. These items should be worn in all teaching and learning environments. You can view the required items here.


    Students will be required to complete Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check upon enrolment, the results of which should allow you to work in an education setting. It is expected that the cost of maintaining DBS clearance (currently £52) is met by you for the duration of the course.

    Students will be expected to cover their own travel costs when travelling between college sites, and when using external facilities for some practical lectures/seminars.

    Additional printing/reprographics may also incur a cost of around £5 per week.
