About this Course

The KW2 Academy Elite Football Programme is a full-time post-16 football pathway in Sheffield for boys and girls aged 16–19 who are serious about developing within the game. Delivered at Hillsborough College, the programme combines high-level football training, competitive fixtures and continued education in a structured, professional environment. Players train throughout the week as part of an elite performance programme while completing an accredited academic qualification. This scholarship-based pathway is designed to support long-term progression, both on the pitch and in education.

What you can study

Our full-time training programme includes:
  • 3 high-level pitch sessions per week
  • 1 competitive match per week
  • Weekly strength & conditioning sessions
All training is delivered by our experienced coaching team in a professional environment designed to maximise performance and development. Students gain experience through workshops coaching opportunities and access to professional facilities and support.

Alongside your football development, you will complete an accredited academic qualification usually in Sport, but you can select an alternative college course.

Sport Level 2
This study programme is for students who want to develop their knowledge and understanding of sport. The programme has two distinct pathways. A fitness pathway that emphasises study in this area including health, exercise and anatomy; and a coaching pathway that focuses on coaching, skill development and analysis of sports performance. The programme has both academic and practical elements of study, plus a mandatory work-based experience in sport.

Sports Coaching and Development Level 3
This is an academic sports course providing a pathway to a range of sport-based degrees at university. Students will study a variety of units such as anatomy and physiology, fitness testing, skill acquisition, sports coaching and leadership. The course comprises both classroom and practical, sport-based learning and features various assessment methods that will prepare you for further academic study.

Entry Requirements

Sport Level 2
4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above to include English Language

Sports Coaching and Development Level 3
5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include English Language or Maths

Formal entry requirements may vary slightly depending on the academic course you choose through The Sheffield College.

Assessment

Sport Level 2
The Level 2 in Sport uses a range of different methods of assessment including both theoretical and practical. Both pathways are entirely coursework assessed with no externally set exams.

Sports Coaching and Development Level 3
The course is assessed through a variety of different methods including course work and practical assessments in resistance training, aerobic training and group fitness sessions.

Where does this Lead

This scholarship-based pathway can lead to further progression within the game or onto university-level study in areas such as sports science, physiotherapy, coaching, or fitness instruction. You could also progress to a higher or degree apprenticeship in personal training, coaching, or sports development.

Interview Process:
Applicants will be contacted by a member of our team for an informal conversation about their previous experience. Those who are a good fit will then be invited to attend an interview and take part in a football trial at our Hillsborough College campus.

At The Sheffield College, you will learn from highly qualified staff with a wealth of experience in both academic and sport sectors. The college offers excellent facilities to support your learning, including fully equipped fitness suites, full size sports halls and pitches, and access to industry-standard resources.

Course Enrichment?
You will have the opportunity to engage in various enrichment activities such as industry visits, guest speaker sessions, workshops, and community-based projects.   

Extra Costs

Students will need to make sure they have sports clothing and trainers appropriate for taking part in fitness. They will be required to purchase and wear their very own fitness uniform T-shirt for all their practical assessment lessons and when attending any trips to meet potential employers.

Students may also be required to pay for a DBS check.

There will also be costs for several visits (local, national and international) which are payable in advance of the trip.

Students may be entitled to help with these costs and other expenses from the college’s Student Support Fund
