About this Course

The Writing career consists of 3 A levels with the option of two different pathways. There will be one core subject depending on the pathway you choose: Writing & Communication - English Language or Creative Writing - English Literature. You will also choose a third A level from the following: English Language, English Literature, Sociology, A Level Psychology, BTEC Psychology, Photography, Media, Film, Art.

Key Units

English Language

The study of English Language A Level allows you to refine and develop your powers of reading, writing and analysis, whilst preparing you for possible study at university. The course content of this A Level includes an exploration of how people, events, places and cultures are represented in the language of newspapers, television, social media and a variety of other platforms. We explore concepts like stereotyping and the process by which a writer influences their reader. You will also study theories concerning language itself, including language change, gender, accent and dialect, teen sociolect and child language development.

English Literature
The study of English Literature A Level aims to give you the opportunity to appreciate and enjoy the study of different forms of literature by encouraging, through close analysis and discussion, a deeper awareness and understanding of a variety of texts, whilst preparing you for possible study at university. You will look at the way writers shape meaning through form, structure and language and how texts relate to their historical and social contexts. The course develops your powers of analysis and your reading and writing skills. It also encourages personal response and engagement with texts and, hopefully, a love of literature.
