About this Course

This supporting teaching and learning programme consists of 11 units which cover aspects required to become a confident, skilled support; ready to work with children and young people. Units include safeguarding, the learning environment, children and young people’s development, teamwork, communication and professional relationships and supporting learning activities. The year-long course has a strong practical element (including a mandatory placement), as well as a sound knowledge base.

Key Units

This supporting teaching and learning programme consists of 11 units which cover aspects required to become a confident, skilled support; ready to work with children and young people. Units include safeguarding, the learning environment, children and young people’s development, teamwork, communication and professional relationships and supporting learning activities. The year-long course has a strong practical element (including a mandatory placement), as well as a sound knowledge base.

The course follows two strands across all 11 units. There is a 'knowledge' based element and a 'to be able' element.

The placement will provide opportunities to prove your understanding in practice, demonstrating the 'to be able' requirements. The 'knowledge' aspect will be delivered and assessed using digital platforms, software, discussions, presentations and shared active learning in college classwork sessions.

Entry Requirements

GCSE grade 3 or equivalent in English Language and Maths is desirable.

Experience of working with children or young people in some capacity will help you gain the most from the course.

Assessment

A combination of written, practical and observed tasks across 11 units, taking place both in college and on placement. 

Where does this Lead

Students who successfully complete this qualification may progress to a Level 3 Diploma, leading to employment and/or further study to become a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) or specialise in an associated area of education, welfare or youth work. 

Future Opportunities

This qualification may enable students to gain employment in the education sector across a wide range of support roles.

This course has two intakes a year; September and January.

Expected college time is one day per week and a placement (of your choice) can be one day or split across two days (morning and afternoon). 

Usually this qualification it is a self-funded programme, however funding may be available depending on individual circumstances. Please contact us for more information on start dates and funding.

Extra Costs

An Enhanced DBS is a requirement to work in the Education Sector (this can be accessed through college at a cost of £57.90).  All participants will need this Enhanced DBS to gain a viable placement. 

The full cost for this course is approximately £1350. If you are unemployed and in receipt of benefit or earning below the low wage threshold, the course is fully funded. If you are 19-23 you must have already achieved a full level 2 to qualify for the funding above. Please note: all quoted fees are subject to change.
