About this Course

This new foundation degree offers students the opportunity to study design, manufacture and business/entrepreneurship. The course offers industry live projects and competitions as a key feature, providing you with opportunities to network and be exposed to real life design situations whilst simultaneously working in a secure learning environment. A series of visiting lectures including local and national entrepreneurs and industry specialists will be provided to support your understanding of fashion production and business. You will be actively encouraged and supported to undertake work experience and placements.

Semester 2
  • Design Processes (20 credits)
  • Business Management and Promotion in Fashion (20 credits)
  • Cultural, Historical and Ethical Studies in Fashion (20 credits)

Year 2
Semester 1
  • Professional Development [Live Project Brief] (20 credits)
  • Enterprise: Managing a Creative Business (20 credits)
  • Technical Skills (20 credits)
Semester 2
  • Design Processes and Application (20 credits)
  • Major Project: Fashion Collection [Student Showcase] (40 credits)

Entry Requirements

Successful completion of a design/art related subject with 56 UCAS points from one of the following:

  • BTEC National Diploma
  • AVCE Double Award
  • GCE A Levels
  • 18+ Art & Design Foundation Diploma
There will also be an additional viewing of a portfolio of work.

Mature applicants with relevant work experience and/or a range of professional qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. 

Students wishing to progress to Sheffield Hallam University for completion of an honours degree should also have Maths and English Language GCSE at Grade C/4 or above.

IELTS score of 6 or above with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills areas for international students.

Feedback
Feedback is given through one to one feedback and during tutorials. Assessment feedback is given during and at the end of each project unit.

Where does this Lead

Students who wish to pursue further study after this qualification may wish to progress on to the ‘top-up’ BA (Hons) Fashion Degree course (Level 6) at Sheffield Hallam University or to other education providers.

Future Opportunities

Students successfully completing the Foundation Degree in Fashion Production with Business will have the opportunity to enter professions in a variety of design related areas. Careers in Fashion Design are diverse, as the core skills are applicable in a wide variety of contexts, ranging from design and manufacture of bespoke items, to the mass production of clothing for specific markets.


There are opportunities in self-employment or small enterprise, through to participation in large scale commercial projects, working as part of a multi-disciplinary design team. The Foundation Degree can also be a starting point for careers in:
