About this Course

This programme of study focuses on preparing you for progression to further technical study within the college. You will have the opportunity to develop technical skills in a chosen area. You will also work towards English and Maths qualifications (Functional Skills or GCSE) that will support your progression to the next step.

Key Units

On this programme, you will study, learn and develop the following things:

  • Train in a technical area (more information below)
  • English and Maths qualifications (Functional Skills or GCSE)
  • Personal social development to increase confidence, resilience and to promote mental health and well-being
  • Employability skills and work-related activity delivered by our Employment Skills Placement Officer
The following technical areas are available. These are delivered by specialist staff within the area and designed to offer a taster and to support the development of study skills.

Construction Multi-trades
An introduction to the construction trades, including bricklaying and carpentry and joinery. You will also develop theory skills ready for your next progression step.

Motor Vehicle
An introduction to motor vehicle maintenance and repair. This includes time in the workshops at our Advanced Technology Centre and undertaking theory skills to support your progression to the next step.

Engineering
An introduction to engineering. This includes time in the workshops at our Advanced Technology Centre and undertaking theory skills to support your progression to the next step.

Health and Social Care
An introduction to health and social care. This will include looking at careers in the health and social care sector and developing the skills to move you onto your next step.

Childcare
An introduction to childcare. This will include looking at careers in the childcare sector and developing the skills to move you onto your next step.

Hair and Beauty
An introduction to hair and beauty. This includes time in the salons at City Campus and undertaking theory skills to support your progression to the next step. 

Games, Media and Design
An introduction to the creative industries. This includes art, media, design and games. This is dependent on campus.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements to be discussed at interview.

Assessment

You will be assessed in a variety of ways. 

These include:
• External assessments for your English and Maths qualifications
• Portfolio assessment – King's Trust Achieve
• A variety of assessment tools to measure progress made on soft skills

Where does this Lead

Learners may progress onto further technical study at Level 1 and 2 at The Sheffield College.


Future Opportunities

Learners may exit to employment or further training.

This pathway has been designed:

• As a first step into post-16 education
• To address the needs of young people who have not yet reached the expected levels in maths and English upon leaving full time education
• To enable young people to improve their English and maths skills and personal and social development so they can progress to their next step
• To enable young people to access pre-technical study in an area of interest

This qualification ensures that all learners are given the same opportunities to access appropriate and relevant education, and improve their life chances. This pathway is intended to last 1 year but is flexible
for young people needing an additional year.
