About this Course

The UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma is a two year practical and cutting edge course which looks to the future of the creative industries and enables you to build not only your creative skills but also helps you to understand how to sell/promote your work and set up your own business ready for your future careers. This course is equivalent to three A Levels and is an exciting blend of photography, design and interactive technology. You will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to shoot professional standard photography for a variety of uses, be conceptual with your image making and learn to plan and produce short films. You will learn how to start a creative business, use social media to promote your business and create expertly designed websites.

Key Units

The College is recognised as one of the leading photographic centres in the UK with good industry contacts including Nikon Academy status. We teach creative and practical photographic skills that are relevant for the rapidly changing creative industries.  We are proud of our industry standard facilities and equipment all of which you can make the most of throughout your time with us.  

There will also be many opportunities within the programme to apply for work experience placements with our expanding network of clients.  Your enrichment also includes many talks and Q&A sessions from a wide variety of creative industry professionals all of which give you first hand information about available pathways and a behind the scenes look at specific job roles.  Each year our students can access a number of national and international trips to places such as London, Paris, St Lucia, Majorca, Berlin and Amsterdam.

A large percentage of our students progress onto Higher Education after this course but some students progress straight into the creative industries.  The course enables students to experience a range of work related activities and exposes them to a range of networking opportunities.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE grades 4-9 which include Maths and English Language.


Portfolio of creative work to be assessed at interview.

Assessment

Course work projects are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.


The grade you achieve overall at FMP determines the amount of UCAS points you receive for university application.

Will this course suit me?
An ideal student for this course is someone who is motivated, has a desire to learn and wants to express their ideas visually. Photography can be an extremely enjoyable and rewarding subject but expect to work hard if you intend to succeed.


Facilities
The Design and Visual Arts department is large and well equipped with highly trained staff, a customised print shop, digital and traditional darkrooms, Mac and PC suites, large well resourced studios, printmaking facilities and a variety of other resources. Equipment is available to hire, students can borrow cameras, graphics tablets, laptops and iPads from the stores.

Extra Costs

A facilities fee of £40 per academic year is payable at enrolment or induction week.  

Exhibition printing fees of approximately £100 per academic year.

Support with these costs may be available from the college Learner Support Fund for those in financial hardship.
