About this Course

The Level 3 Certificate in counselling provides knowledge and understanding of the main core theories and theorists that underpin counselling and addresses the nature of psychological problems and how they may be approached. The specialist skills and knowledge gained in this qualification will be applicable in a range of working contexts. It will enable learners to understand the need for a firm grasp of a coherent theoretical approach to counselling or supporting others.

Key Units

The qualification has three components:

Counselling Theory
Counselling Skills
Developing Reflective Practice in Counselling

These will be assessed through a written exam, observation of skills practice role plays, and written work completed in the format of journal reflections. You will be expected to complete a minimum of 3-4 hours of independent study outside of the allocated weekly classes to ensure that you have gained knowledge and/or experience to support you on the qualification

The qualification is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. Each component is a percentage of your overall mark:

Counselling Skills - role play 25%

This component prepares learners to work with their own clients in a supervised placement. Learners will use strategies and interventions in counselling sessions in the form of role plays, before reflecting on their responses.

Developing Reflective Practice in Counselling - journal 40%

This component will enable learners to work towards becoming a reflective practitioner of counselling by considering self-awareness, supervision and issues of difference and diversity. This component will support them in preparing for work in a supervised placement.

Counselling Theory - exam 35%

This component will provide learners with the knowledge and understanding of the main approaches to counselling and the theorists that underpin most counselling practice. It will enable them to embark on evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of using various approaches to counselling.

Entry Requirements

Students must have a Level 2 English or Literacy qualification, such as GCSE or Functional Skills, and a recognised Level 2 counselling qualification (or equivalent qualification such as Level 2 Helping Skills).

Applications may also be considered from anyone who has studied at Level 3 or above on a psychology qualification that had modules relating to counselling theorists. And, also has experience of being in a listening role either paid or voluntary.

Assessment

Coursework, exams, role play and reflective writing in journals.

Where does this Lead

This qualification has been designed as a step in the ladder for professional development for aspiring and practicing counselors. Learners may progress onto the AIM Qualifications Level 4 Diploma in Counselling Practice (or other Level 4 counselling qualifications).

Future Opportunities

You can use this qualification as a progression route towards a range of other qualifications or job roles, for example, advice and guidance, health and social care support roles or workplace mentoring.

This qualification is currently delivered by one of our counselling lecturers who is also a qualified counselor registered with the British Association of Counselors and Psychotherapists BACP.

We offer two intakes a year:

September to June (weekly evening classes - 4.30pm - 8.45pm or day classes - 9.30am - 1.30pm)
January to June (Weekly day classes 9.30am - 4.30pm)

Extra Costs

The full fee for this course is approximately £811. If you are 19 or over and have not already achieved a full level 3 qualification or if you are 19 or over and earning below the low wage threshold this course is fully funded.

You may be able to apply for an Advanced Learning Loan for this course. Please note: all quoted fees are subject to change.

L3 Counselling is a NSF Free Courses for Jobs funded for either your first Full Level 3 qualification, if you are working and earn less £21,255 before any deductions (if you live in the South Yorkshire area or £20,319 outside South Yorkshire) or you are unemployed and claiming a means tested benefit such as Universal Credit (PiP, child benefit, Carer's allowance and normal state pension are not means tested).
