About this Course

This qualification is a two year, full-time course that specialises in the animal management sector. It is designed for students who wish to focus their studies on this sector, with a firm intention of progressing to employment in one of the wide variety of roles available. The new BTEC Nationals have been created in collaboration with employers and representatives from higher education and relevant professional bodies so you know that the content is up to date and that it includes the knowledge, understanding, skills and attributes required in the sector. Students will cover topics such as breeding and genetics, animal welfare, animal behaviour and practical animal husbandry.

Key Units

Year 1 (Foundation Diploma)

Animal Biology

Students will consider all aspects of animal biology, this will then be evidenced in an external written exam.

Animal Welfare and Ethics

Students will learn about aspects of welfare of animals with linked legislation. This will be evidenced through an external written exam.

Practical Animal Husbandry

Within this unit, students will undertake learning in all aspects of husbandry of animals. Areas such as accommodation cleaning, feeding and handling.

Animal Behaviour

Students will learn about behaviours of different animals and how this can be used in industry.

Animal Health and Disease

Students will cover aspects of diseases in common animal species and how to maintain the health.

Work Experience in the Animal Care Sector

Students will learn how to complete professional working documents, techniques to succeed in industry and also take part in work placement.

Exotic Animal Husbandry

Students will consider the impact of exotics animals in the UK and their required care when they are kept in captivity.

Year 2 (Extended Diploma)

Animal Breeding and Genetics

Students will learn about the genetics in animal breeding, plus the impacts on animals. This will be evidenced through a written external exam.

Investigative Research Project

Students can choose a topic which they enjoy to research and carry out a project, they will then collate results, this unit prepares students for dissertations in university.

Advanced Animal Nutrition

Students investigate nutrition of animals and linked chemistry behind this, it will involve practical work in a science lab.

Animals in Boarding Establishments

Students examine requirements to run a successful boarding establishment and the correct care for animals under the businesses care.

Animal Grooming

Students learn about coat types, equipment and customer service, completing grooming on a range of animals.

Livestock Husbandry

Students learn about different methods of livestock care and link this to practical work on a farm.

Principles of Animal Nursing

Learners will consider nursing techniques for animals and linked diseases and treatments.

Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Management

Students will learn about conservation efforts linking to the ecology of species and even take part in some onsite conservation work.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including English Language, Maths and Double Science.

Where does this Lead

There are many roles in this sector where recruitment is at graduate level. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses, for example:

About the animal care sector

The animal care sector is developing rapidly into a service industry meeting the broad demands of the animal-owning and interested public. Animal care is worth £1 billion to the UK economy. This sector has 20,000 businesses, 78,000 employees and many volunteers. There are many different career paths and opportunities for those wishing to work in animal care, which range from working with small to large animals, and domesticated to exotic animals, in sub-sector areas such animal welfare, business, science and wildlife conservation.

Extra Costs

You may be required to provide your own overalls (available to purchase through the college for approximately £15) and a pair of wellington/steel toe-capped boots. Students may also purchase a Sheffield College animal care polo-shirt, however this is not a required/mandatory uniform.

Students are also advised to provide a USB memory stick so that they can store their work/assignments.

Please be aware that students will be required to organise their own travel arrangements to and from their placement.

Students who are in financial hardship may be eligible to apply for a Student Support Fund to help them with course related expenses.
