About this Course

The Level 2 progression study programme is designed to give you the industry recognised skills as either a site carpenter or bench joiner. This qualification will further develop your skills in the practical aspects of carpentry and joinery, enabling you to progress into employment upon successful completion of the course.

Key Units

This study programme is available to students progressing from a Level 1 qualification and will give you the skills required at Level 2 by completing either the City & Guilds Diploma (6706-23) in Site Carpentry.


You will cover a range of joinery techniques used within the industry, as well as key skills such as first and second fixing. You will also be taught the further elements of health and safety practices on a work site.

The units delivered on this diploma are:
  • Health and Safety Awareness
  • Principles of Building
  • First and Second Fix Operations
  • Safe Operating Use of Power Tools

English and Maths
These skills are at the heart of construction, and you will be expected to complete English and Maths studies as part of your programme (unless you hold a GCSE grade 4 (reformed grading) or grade C (legacy grading) in Maths and/or English).

Entry Requirements

  • Level 1 qualification in Carpentry & Joinery
  • 4 GCSEs grades A*- E / grade 2 or above (or acceptable alternatives), including English Language

Assessment

This programme is assessed through:

  • practical synoptic assessments
  • online exams
  • completion of a practical handbook

Where does this Lead

This qualification is designed for people wishing to expand their career within the building industry as a joiner. Successful completion of all the elements of this study programme may lead to progression into employment, or onto an Apprenticeship.

Personal Study 
You will be expected to work independently on project work when you are not in college, to assist with your revision and independent study skills.

Work Experience
You will complete a mandatory work experience placement in the carpentry and joinery industry.


Enrichment
You will complete non-qualification activities to compliment the work experience placement opportunities offered at Level 2. These activities will include employability skills building, and additional certification in first aid and working at height.

Extra Costs

You will need to bring your own overalls and safety boots for workshop sessions as a minimum requirement. All other safety equipment will be provided on an as and when needed basis.

Students in financial hardship can apply to the Student Support Fund for help with course related expenses.
