About this Course

Engineering Operatives are predominantly involved in engineering operations which are key to the success of the Manufacturing and Engineering sector allowing employers to grow their business while developing a work force with the relevant skills and knowledge to enhance the sustain the sector. The role covers a wide range of common and job specific skills sets that can be transferred across the manufacturing engineering industry sectors during the course of their careers. Dependent on the sector that they are employed in there may be subtle differences in terms of composition and application of the job role specific skills and knowledge they will require, however the core skills and knowledge will be the same regardless of the sector/area they work in.

Key Units

Maintenance Pathway Apprentices will study:
  • Health and Safety
  • Working efficiently and effectively 
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Business Improvement 
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques 
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment
  • Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits

Mechanical Manufacturing Pathway Apprentices will study:
  • Health and Safety
  • Working efficiently and effectively 
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Business Improvement 
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques 
  • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations 
  • Preparing and using milling machines 

Apprentices will split your time learning theory and applying this into workshop activities to demonstrate their competency. Apprentices will be assessed via online tests, being observed, writing up job reports and evaluations and questions and answers.  

Entry Requirements

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their Apprenticeships.

Assessment

Throughout your time in college you will be assessed through direct observations, producing job reports an evaluations, questions and answers and online tests. 

At the end of your learning period, you will undertake your end point assessment (EPA). 

Where does this Lead

Following completion of this Apprenticeship, Apprentices could progress onto a:

  • Maintenance and Operations for Engineering Technicians Level 3 Apprenticeship
  • Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship

Once Apprentices have received all of their learning with the college, they will enter gateway stage where they will undertake an end point assessment (EPA), assessed by an external organisation. 

The EPA will consist of:
  • Practical skills test
  • Professional Discussion supported by a portfolio of evidence
